Could Tyson have beaten Lennox in 96?

After the Mercer fight every commentator on Sky HBO etc were saying Lennox was next in line for the super fight, obviously Don King and Lennox settled it in court and Holyfield got the shot instead. If Lennox had met Tyson instead of Holyfield could Tyson have beaten him then? I for one highly doubted it. I actually think the Lennox that fought Morrison Mercer etc was more dangerous then the later day Lennox. The combinations Lewis was throwing against Mercer and Morrison were pretty damn impressive for someone that's 6'5 247. I think Mike was still a B+ fighter in the mid 90's though so it would have been closer.

A prime Tyson would always have a punchers chance. But Lewis would take him into deep water where he eventually would get ko'd

No. Even though Mike was still good in the 90's, he was past his prime. Even prime for prime, I think Lennox would have beat him.

Tyson would have been a huge favorite. I remember arguing with everyone that Lewis would best him and only one guy I knew agreed with me.

It would have been alot more competitive than the fight we saw eventually.

I give Tyson some chance because Lewis at that time wasn't as self assured as he was later on and Tyson still had that aura of being super dangerous up until Holyfield.

There was a chance that Lewis would be too cautious and allow Tyson to bully him, but as long as Lewis was confident he would have been too much.

A prime version of Tyson would destroyed lewis, 96 version of him I'm not so sure.

In 96 Tyson would have only lasted longer until Lennox eventually KO'd him. The only version of Tyson that would have had a chance is the Rooney trained late 80's version. Even then I really don't know if he could have won. Lennox was a big man with a lot of talent.
