... if Frank Bruno and George Foreman came back, could they lead the division?
For a start, I always think of Bruno as being a bit... well, crap, really. Not much natural boxing skill, major chin weakness, a psychological frailty and so on.
But one thing that made Bruno vs. Tyson fights fairly exciting is the reported insistence that Bruno could actually punch harder than Tyson. He was just never very good at landing. Remember, Bruno was the first person to visibly wobble Iron Mike. Not only that, but he was getting the best of Lennox Lewis for most of seven rounds.
So, my point? Well, the heavyweights are wack right now, yeah? Or average at best? The WBC champ is someone whom a focussed Lewis effortlessly outboxed and blew out in four rounds. John Ruiz is another, while an ageing Chris Byrd hangs onto his belt. Only Wlad, Toney and Brewster seem really dangerous.
But imagine Bruno vs. Wlad. Yeah, yeah, laugh it up - I'm willing to bet that Bruno was MUCH the bigger puncher, and that he'd only have to land a couple to topple him.
Let's move onto Big George. Solid chin, solid punch. Are you telling me Wlad would have the skill to outbox George for 12 rounds without him landing? He could scarcely do it to the extremely limited Peter.
Forget Wlad. Big George bombing out Rahman and Ruiz. Being able to connect with the ageing Byrd.
Big George going toe-to-toe with Brewster in an oddly sick yet still compelling slug fest.
Could it happen?
Am I rambling?
Well, yes, I am. But could it?
