"He was just a stepping stone" Davis said of (Aaron) Pryor. "I'm the best and I'm going to win the Gold. I wont be beat."
This was Howard talking right after he beat Pryor to make the 1976 U.S. Olympic team. When they were there at the Olympics, though, Davis' mother passed away and Howard struggled with going home for the funeral or not. Teammates and family convinced him to stay and go for the gold...not only did he saty but he won every bout by unanimous decision and captured Gold AND the Outstanding Boxer Award. To be able to stay as focused after her death as he was the night he beat Aaron Pryor is pretty amazing...most assume Sugar Ray won the O.B. but, like I say, it was really Howard who came away with it. A great moment from the 1970's
