Comments Thread For: Chavez Jr. Aiming To Turn The Tables, Knock Rubio Out

WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31KOs) is no longer taking baby steps. On February 4th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, Julio will face the biggest challenge of his entire career - fierce puncher Marco Antonio Rubio (53-5-1, 46KOs). Ribio has knocked out nine of his last ten opponents and says he will go for the knockout in the very first round.

Think about it... 20 years ago, would a champion backed by a top promoter would be able to say that his toughest test would be a Mexican road warrior like Rubio.

I know what you're thinking... but the likes of Roy Jones took soft touches after proving themselves against the best. But the level of protection of current champions and prospects have effectively ended the era of warriors... now all of them want to be business men.

Julio, with a better camp, trainer and backing will have the edge on this one. I can't shake the image of Rubio getting clocked on one round by Jantuah, outworked by Kassim and running around like a headless chicken in the ring against Pavlik.

I think Rubio he will bring the heat, and the moment he realized that Junior is not the chump he thought.. the fight will turn ugly and uneventful.

However.... if Chavez is as over hyped as many think... and he gets caught by the savvy veteran... well it's gonna be a long night. But i doubt Papi Chavez or Uncle Bob will jeopardize a date with Cotto if they didn't know something we don't!

Excellent post! I've wondered about these things as well. Chavez & Canelo are supposed to already be champions, then why are they still stepping up in class? Champions should already be, (up in class).

However I do not want to see Cotto Chavez. Jr is too big for Cotto & wipes the floor with the Puerto Rican.

You underate both Rubio and Jr. as far as I can tell. This should be a good fight and that's all you should be concerned with.

Chavez is ho made and b1tch certified, just a coward.

I can't take this fight too seriously. people forget Rubio quit against Pavlik, he's hardly a real mexican warrior. if he was the Coward Chavez wouldn't fight him.

this might be a good fight just because you have a Coward vs a Quitter, who b1tches out 1st?

Martinez is supposed to be at the fight, I wonder if Chavez sr will bring enough diapers for little Chavez because you know he's going to **** himself everytime he looks over at Martinez

                maybe Arum can wip

That's not fair, Rubio is more than a sufficient challenge at this point in Chavez's career.

Chavez isn't a prospect anymore. he is a "champion". I think at that point the training wheels have to come off.

Chavez is opening ducking his mandatory challenger and makes him a coward. the WBC convention named Martinez the mandatory.

if Chavez didn't have a title, then fighting journeymen would be fine, this would be a good fight for him but he's a "champion" and should respect the rules of the WBC and face his mandatory like everyone else, but his name is Chavez so he doesn't have to.

I know Arum says Martinez isn't know but is Chavez making more from a Rubio fight? did he make more against Manfredo? the thing is Chavez knows he'll lose and is afraid of it. I don't care what he says because actions speak louder than words and he's acting like a ho
