Hello,
Polish boxers first successes were gold medals in Olympic Games. In those days we hadnt any professional boxers, but we won 8 gold medals in our history. The first known polish prof boxer was Andrew Golota. Till nowadadays he is a symbol of boxing for polish fans. Later we had Dariusz "Tiger" Michalczewski, former WBO, WBA, IBF light heavyweight and former WBO cruiserweight champion of the world. Unfortunately, much of his career Michalczewski was fighting under the German flag. Nowadays the most popular polish boxer is Tomasz Adamek former WBC light heavyweight and former IBF and Ring Magazine cruiserweight champion.
In the present polish prof boxing dynamiclly develops. Below I would like to describe the profiles of the most intresting and future-boxers in our country:
1) Grzegorz "Super G" Proksa 26 - 0 - 0 (19KO) - probably future star of the worldwide boxing. He debuted in Las Vegas and he never fought in Poland. He is current middleweight EBU champion. He won this belt in last fight beating former IBF champion Sebastian Sylvester. Sylvester didnt want to continue after 3 round. In next duel Proksa should fight versus Sebastian Zbik, but it seems that Zbik dont want to fight. Its only my opinion but im convinced that even today Proksa is better fighter than Chavez or Sturm. I hope that in 2-3 years he will beat Martinez and become new Ring Magazine champion and top 10 P4P.
2) Krzysztof "Diablo" Włodarczyk 46 - 2 - 1 (32KO) - current WBC and former IBF cruiserweight champion of the world. Wlodarczyk won his title in rematch with Fragomeni. He defended him vs Robinson, Palacios and Green. After fight with Palacios he was criticized by boxing fans for his attitude. 3 months later he commited suicide and in public eye was burned. Everything changed in November when "Diablo" won by KO with Danny Green in Australia. Now Mr Wasilewski (Wlodarczyk's manager) in planning to confront him with Antonio Tarver.
3) Mateusz "Master" Masternak 24 - 0 - 0 (18KO) - our biggest prospect in cruiserweight, training by the same coach (Andrzej Gmitruk) who has trained Tomasz Adamek. Few weeks ago Masternak signed contract with the Saureland group. We are waiting for his title shoot.
4) Mariusz "Viking" Wach 26 - 0 - 0 (14KO) - #2 HW in Poland. In next fight he will try to knock out Tye Fields and in the near future Wach will fight versus Klitschko, of course he is not as talanted as Adamek but it will be very intresting to see the third polish boxer trying to take Klitschko's title.
5) Artur "Szpila" Szpilka 9 - 0 - 0 (7KO) - as popular as Adamek. He was fighting in cruiserweight but he was arrested before fight with Bartnik (Adamek vs Golota). He spent in prison nearly two years, after leaving he fought 4 times (eg. RTD Owen Beck). Szpilka is really charismatic and attracts media attention. He is also really talented but he is too little expierence. I recommend to follow career this youngster because in future he may end the domination of Klitschko brothers.
In addition to the five above described above in good shape is Dawid Kostecki, who will try to win the title in light heavyweight. Friend of Dawid (from the same group) Pawel Kolodziej within few months should know who will be his oponent in the fight for cruiserweight title. Thats all if I think about polish chances for title, but we also have some good boxers whose names ale recognizable in the Europe like: Sosnowski, Jackiewicz or Wilczewski.
Boxing in Poland is becoming more and more popular i think in nearly future we will have a lot of young prospects and we will be able to organize more shows like Klitschko vs Adamek (45k people in the stadium). On the other hand I must say that our amateur boxing is dead. Finally I hope that in 10-20 years polish boxing will be very close and similiar to british and german (not german judges).
