Ex-boxer Peter Sandy, 84, punches mugger in Cambridge

An 84-year-old retired boxer who punched a mugger as he tried to rob him at knifepoint in Cambridge has been praised for his bravery by police.

Peter Sandy was approached by a man wielding what police said was a "commando-style" knife, who demanded he hand over his money.

The man ran off empty-handed after Mr Sandy "floored" him with a left hook.

Det Con Sam Constable said: "The victim was scared and reacted instinctively and bravely by punching the robber."

Although Mr Sandy was unharmed, he said was too shaken by the incident to report it until the next day.

The attack happened on Colville Road, close to Cherry Hinton High Street in the south of the city, at about 22:30 GMT on Wednesday.

Mr Sandy described his attacker as white, slim, aged 18 to 20 with short, dark hair.

He was wearing a light jacket, dark trousers and white trainers.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
