Pacquiao likely to break Tyson's record of PPV events

Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao is likely to set the record for the most number of seven-figure pay-per-view (PPV) events in boxing, according to a Yahoo! Sports columnist.

Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports said the Filipino icon is likely to surpass Mike Tyson’s record for setting the most million PPV events in boxing.

“He currently has five main events that have topped seven figures… He’s tied with Holyfield for second place of all-time, behind Tyson’s record of six,” Meltzer said in his column.

In 2011 alone, Pacquiao drew 1.10 million buys for his May 7 fight against Shane Mosley and 1.41 million buys for his November 12 fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.

Meltzer said the 33-year-old Pacquiao is expected to post more PPV records in the years to come.

“[He] has established he can hit the mark any time he faces an opponent with name value.”

Other PPV records set by Pacquiao were during his fights against Oscar de la Hoya in 2008, Miguel Cotto in 2009 and Antonio Margarito in 2010.

Against De la Hoya, Pacquiao generated 1.25 PPV buys. A year later, he registered 1.2 million buys against Cotto.

In 2010, Pacquiao garnered an estimated 1.15 million buys during the Margarito fight.
