    Can John McCain Save Boxing?

Boxing has been ruled by chaos for the past century, but as boxing falls behind other sports when seeking the public's attention, more and more boxing experts are looking at John McCain’s federal commission as the white horse to save boxing. There is no doubt that boxing's lack of a central body has hurt it's marketability and with promoters profiting from the present system; reform looks hopeless. McCain, a former boxer in the Naval Academy, views boxing as his personal crusade. McCain once explained, “Boxing is capable of grandeur. There's something about some match ups that's transcendent. Some of the greatest sporting events of the 20th century were the Muhammad Ali fights." [details]

I have been in numerous arguments over this subject, and I have to say that I am in favor of it.

I doubt that government will do any better running boxing than it does running Social Security or Medicare (both into insolvency).

However, that would be better for boxing than the way it is now, because boxing has gone from the worlds #1 sport to not even on network TV in only a few tens of years.

I would hope that a government run game would be better, but I am uncertain about this. The biggest thing that holds boxing back is how it is percieved. The general public at large believes that boxing is run by nothing but crooks and gangstas, thus these people would rather not be seen ringside being side by side the non righteous. If the public believed that they were watching non tainted boxing, it would help. I believe that government intervention would help in that matter.

If this would go through and the government began to regulate boxing it could be great or it could be horrible. It could be horrible if they were to appoint non boxing people to run the sport as they do in many of the state commisions right now. It could be great if they brought in people that actually know the game and its angles to run the show. Otherwise, it would still remain the same 3 ring or 3 belted circus.

I love the fact that McCain recognizes that there is a problem in the sport. I love the fact that he is getting involved and trying to do the right things. Get people that know boxing and mix the council with people that know the politics, it could be great.
