Comments Thread For: Andriy Kotelnik Ready To Retire, Plans Final Career Fight

Former WBA junior welterweight world champion Andriy Kotelnik (31-4-1, 13 KOs), announces the imminent end of his boxing career. The Ukrainian fighter recently celebrated his 34th birthday. His decision was partially made due to health problems, but he also felt a lack of support to obtain championship fights. Kotelnik was the first man to beat Gavin Rees and Marco Maidana. He lost a decision to Amir Khan in 2009 and then a controversial decision to Devon Alexander in 2010.

This is what signing with King does for your career.

Andriy Kotelnik, a true champ, unfortunate in his career defining bouts due to home cooking and Don King's antics. This is truly some sad news.

Seriously underrated boxer who right now, with more fights could havr been top 4 in the 140lbs division. To me, he already is. Sad news.

Good luck with your future champ and huge respect.

Very surprising. He could have made some damned good coin fighting as that upper-echelon gatekeeper type.

He is waaaay to good to be a gatekeeper. Outside of Khan, no one has really beaten him. I thought he won all his other fights, and he mainly lost due to homecooking.

Its a shame, he really is a very good fighter who deserved better.

In the article it states that he doesn't want to become a gatekeeper or a name people build off of. Major props to him because if better fighters (cough)Roy Jones(cough) thought like this, their legacy wouldn't be dragged through the mud.

The only ****ty thing with all this is Kotelnik should of gotten a few more paydays. A lot of things ***ed it up and I'm sure HBO won't pick him up. Best of luck, tragic end but this is nothing new in the sport of boxing.

This is a it sad. There is not too much between the top LWW fighters and Kotelnik is right up there.
