Its certainly a ballsy move and we should all credit him for having the dignity to do what he thought was right even if it may have cost him $$$$ down the line. Its good to know some people still have values.

That belt didn't line him up for anything but to pay sanctioning fees.

The WBC was the only one profiting from it, Martinez is already bigger than any title out there and he is the ring #1 MW.

Belts are meaningless now a days

People act like Martinez is unstoppable,a nice streak of wins and koing Williams still doesnt stop the fact he got koed by boxing biggest bum Margarito. If he were as badass as his fanboys would make you believe then why not move to 168 he would be a tiny sm but great fighters take those chances.

It depends. If ditching the Diamond belt removes his champion emeritus status, then it was a very dumb move in my opinion. Martinez, as much has I love him, does not have the crowds or connections to call shots in boxing despite his talents. Where does he go now? Fight more unknown European opponents on Showtime for less money with no title?

Being at the mercy of the sanctioning bodies to enforce their rules sucks, but is refusing to deal with them, rejecting the highest-paying network, and toiling in obscurity against difficult opponents all that glorious?? I don't see it.

This Question is for Iceman John Scully

Scully, dont you think this belts are worthless? I mean what purpose do they have beside getting sanctioning fees?

This is the only sport that a player(boxer) have to pay to get a title.

Don you think, we need a international organization like FIBA, FIFA and those types of Federations so boxing can be more equal to everybody around the glove and to have universal rules and only one commision and title per division?

No they don't, which is why he needs the belts to get the fights/money.

Great move. The alphabet belts are worthless and every true boxing fan knows it. Martinez is the one and the only middleweight champion of the world, the rest are pretenders.

I wish there were two champs like when I was a kid...that way the unification could be so big (GOOD for boxing). I remember when Leonard-Hearns were about to fight and the anticipation for me was like waiting for Christmas morning, it was ELECTRIC. I think, honestly, that the super, regular, DIAMOND AND SILVER titles have definitely went a long ways towards making the titles worthless, yes. I hate to say it but its true...Ill tell u why: Right now I honestly cannot tell u who the official middleweight champ is...the silver and the diamond got me all messed up. I hate it. I wish it was cut and dry and I wish the Govt' could step in and straighten it all out. On another note, I will assume that the Roccigianni-Nunn situation is what started all of these different WBC titles into coming into existence.
