I just saw Calvin Brock vs. Clifford Etienne.
The glorious thing about the current division (if they actually fight) is that virtually ANYONE could be the unified champ at present. Even the guy who runs my newspaper store.
But could Brock be that man? No offence, but I sincerely doubt it. He's okay, pretty solid in all ways, decent chin, decentish power, but there's nothing really outstanding about him from the fight I saw.
Ettienne came in with some of the finest man pwabs I've ever seen - I was in a sticky funk all the way through that fight looking at those glorious bronze mammaries - yet he was still bossing Brock for lots of it, and getting through his leaky defence. He does a mean impression of Chico, too, doesn't he?
I can see Brock getting better, but there's nothing much outstanding about him, is there? I see him always being a contender.
I still say that if any of the up-and-coming boxers break out, it'll be Audley Harrison (no Brit bias... I'll freely admit Matt Skelton's awful). If he makes it out of December 10th in one piece he could go somewhere as he's got more natural talent than Brock and Sam Peter put together.
Talking of which, there was an interesting write-up on Audley in this week's Boxing News saying that his opposition isn't as bad as largely claimed (at a certain point - 15 bouts ISTR - he'd fought men with a 77% winning ratio, which was considerably more than Brock, Peter and other contemporaries). Also, though he's been a pro for nearly five years, nearly two of them have been time out for injuries. So he's not that far off the mark, and with Vitali retiring he really has come at the ideal time.
