Is Jermain Taylor's stamina issues a misconception?

I always read about him gassing out late which he does but I think it is due to him being so tight and uncomfortable as a fighter, him throwing such forceful punches even his jab early, and not so much due to conditioning problems.

In contrast look at an earlier James Toney who even then is known for not living the most healthy lifestyle and he never was gassed, it was because he is a natural fighter unlike Taylor who is a natural athlete turned fighter and James was always so relaxed and composed in the ring.

    Agree or disagree and why?

I agree with you. He loses stamina because he puts everything into his punches. He doesn't look very fleet-footed when moving around, like he has weights around his ankles.

He didn't run out of stamina in his early fights when his jab alone did most of the work. Hopkins took away his confidence in the Jab and he started to unload more to win rounds, instead of trying to win with that jab. But it only really cost him in two fights, where he had both guys hurt (Pavlik and Froch) and expended a lot of energy in trying to finish them off.

He is obviously a well-conditioned and talented athlete. In the ring however, even the most conditioned athlete can run out of stamina if he does not know how to properly conserve his energy for the 12 round distance. Nerves and tightness have a lot to do with. A single misplaced flurry of punches can tire a person out, not to mention all the unnecessary, almost nervous upperbody movements that Taylor did in anticipating the punches.

Another factor is that Jermain Taylor was a rather big middleweight who likely cut a large amount of weight to make the 160 lb limit, even 168. There are rumours of him showing up well over the contracted weight limit for training camps and using preparation mostly as means to lose the weight.

Yeah, agree he definitely seemed to start the fight very tight which not only can cause you to (adrenaline)dump a lot of energy early...but that tightness and being so uncomfortable starts to overexert you mentally which also can tire you. not to mention the shots he'd take, he had a good chin but its draining obviously

throwing big shots very early, he used to land with THUD no matter if it was flush or not. He also wasted a lot of energy on unnecessary movement, constantly jerking his body even if he was outside of his opponents punching range where he could have grabbed a quick breathers.

In the bold, I believe that's the biggest reason, even made a thread on that years ago. The dude punches with far too much commitment. Devon Alexander has somewhat of a same problem, but Devon is much tighter.

I was going to say this. JT was a HUGE MW, even SMW.

Toney grew up in the ring.

Taylor started late..he never learned to pace himself..

Oscar grew up in the ring but gassed in his big fights because of nerves just like Jermain's rookie azz.
