I think Shields is a good trainer (although there are those who seem to have their reservations). The obvious problem with the Rigo/Shields partnership is the language barrier. It's not only potentially detrimental, but it's gotta be a drag for both men. Enter Salas. Ismael speaks the same language as Guillermo; and, being Cuban, shares the same culture with Rigondeaux. Also, Salas was a coach on the Cuban national team. I'm sure that Rigo worked with him to at least some extent. There's a lot to be said for all this.
There's been some speculation as to why Gamboa left Salas. I thought perhaps Yuri wanted someone with more professional experience, like Steward (whom he's now working with). But it's been mentioned that Ismael wanted more money. I don't know what's true or not, but Rigondeaux picked up Ismael right after Gamboa and he parted ways. "El Chacal" obviously thinks highly of him. When it comes down to it, the most important thing is the fighter/trainer dynamic. I wish them both well.
