Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales Interview.

    MANNY PACQUIAO

In your eyes, what will be the difference in this fight compared to the first one?

Manny Pacquiao: I am going to train much harder and I will be more focused during training and in preparations for the fight.

Freddie Roach: We are going to train much harder because this is the guy who beat us. We have a better attitude. I mean competitively, we are going to be more focused. I think we may have taken him a bit lightly the first time because (Marco Antonio) Barrera beat him and we beat Barrera. We expect him to give us a great fight because he is fighting Pacquiao and, of course, this is Erik Morales. The Filipino versus Mexican rivalry is huge. We are going to work hard for this fight, make some adjustments and whatnot. I can’t tell you just yet because the fight hasn’t happened, but I can tell you that we will fight a different fight. There were too many distractions during training last time and this time we’re with a new group. There will be no distractions; everything will be taken care of. The only thing that Manny has to worry about for this fight is the fight itself and that’s the way it should be. He doesn’t have to worry about hotel rooms or tickets or where his family will sit this time around because that is their job (points to Gary Shaw) and they are doing their job.

What have you learned from Morales and his style since you two first fought?

Pacquiao: I learned to fight at a proper distance from him. I learned that my distance last time wasn’t the best.

Gary Shaw: He is going to take control of this fight. He is going to take control with his jab.

Pacquiao: Yeah, my jab. I will control him with my jab this time around and I will use my (natural) fighting style with it.

Did anything about Morales surprise you the first time? Was his power better than you thought, or his chin, his speed better or not as good?

Pacquiao: Nothing really surprised me except his skill. He is very good and he is really a counter puncher.

Roach: He is a great counter puncher. I’ve never seen Morales better than on that night. He had a great fight and a great night. The cut didn’t help us, of course, and it could have been a whole different turn of events if Manny didn’t get cut, but we’ll make some adjustments for that style. In this training camp we are going to work on a lot of new stuff to combat Morales’ style and his (flaws). Manny will be a better fighter and a more complete fighter this time and not just a knockout puncher with just the left hand. His right hooks are just as good as his left hand.

Shaw: As Freddie and Manny would say, you probably saw the best Erik Morales on that night, but you didn’t see the best Manny Pacquiao.

Since you have fought him already and now you are preparing for the rematch, as a person how do you view Morales?

Pacquiao: Outside of the ring, I respect Morales very much. He is good guy. But once inside the ring, I don’t respect him.

Tell us about the glove situation this time around. You will be using your preferred Reyes Gloves, correct?

Pacquiao: Oh, the gloves situation. Yes, we will be using my gloves.

Shaw: We will each be using our own brand of gloves. We will be using Reyes and I believe Morales will be using Winning.

Roach: Correct. Manny will be using his gloves that he likes (Reyes) and Erik will use Winning. He likes Winning because they are much bigger and they can protect his face much better when he puts his hands up and they also protect the hands more, I guess. It’s hard to get through the bigger gloves, also.

Shaw: I think there are two parts to this fight as there were with the first fight. This time, Manny has nothing to worry about because Shelly Finkel and myself have taken care of the glove situation and therefore, Manny’s only focus will be with Freddie inside the ring. That is huge for the fighter when he doesn’t have to worry about where his family is going to be. Everything that goes along will be taken care of so Manny will have a clear head when he is training and he can stay focused on what he’s supposed to be focused on. In this fight, you will see a different and better Manny in the ring. Outside the ring, you will see a very relaxed Manny Pacquiao because he’ll know that all this other stuff has already been taken care of.

Pacquiao: Yes, and on January 21, you will see the real Manny Pacquiao in the ring.

    ERIK MORALES

Hey Erik. Do these countless interviews and press conferences ever get tiresome? I mean, you have to be asked the same questions over and over. Does it ever get to be annoying?

(Laughs) No, no, no. It is part of my job, you know? I know that people are doing their job and there are different types of media and they ask the questions in a different way. I know they are here to do a job and this is part of my job. So no, it doesn’t get tiresome. I don’t have a problem with it; I enjoy doing it.

Is this rematch with Manny the most important fight of your career?

I think that at this junction of my career, yeah. I would say so. But later on when I am done with my career, we’ll look back onto the ones that really were the most important and which ones were not. But right now, yes, it definitely is.

You have been criticized for your performance/loss to Zahir Raheem. When I watched the fight, you didn’t appear to really be into the fight and not focused. What are your thoughts on that fight looking back to it?

It’s okay. I always get criticism. Even when it’s good criticism, we take it and learn from it. I think that when people criticize me, maybe they are right. I don’t know. I don’t think so.

Obviously you beat Pacquiao the first time, but in your mind, how will this rematch be different, if at all, and what have you learned about Manny?

I think the first thing about the fight during the first fight was my attack. Whenever I attacked him, he went backward and he didn’t know what to do. I don’t think he’s going to learn how to do it any better than from the first time. His problem is not going forward because he is good coming forward. But his problem is going backward and that is what I will do (make him back up).

Did anything about Manny surprise you during the first fight? Was he stronger or weaker, quicker or slower than you expected?

For me, the question was how strong is he? Everyone had been saying how he has been knocking all these guys out and putting them down. That was what I was looking for; to see how strong he really was. In the first round when he hit me, I figured out that this guy wasn’t really that strong and he didn’t have the kind of punch to knock me out.

After dealing with Manny through the first fight and now building up the rematch, what are your thoughts on him as a person outside the ring?

It’s been the same, really. I don’t know him really that well, but I think we have treated each other very well and with respect.

You are fighting for Mexico and you have a legion of fans. How is Manny Pacquiao viewed in Mexico? Is he viewed as the ultimate enemy and do the people of Mexico rally against his name?

Of course. People expect that of you. When you are fighting a guy from another country, your whole country is behind you. They expect you to give a great fight and to win, to beat this guy. That is what I am going to try to do.

You are a very popular figure in Mexico. Julio Cesar Chavez, of course, is the greatest and most popular fighter in Mexican history. How long do you think it will be until you are right alongside the great Chavez in terms of a legacy and then surpass him, if that’s even possible?

Right now we are the same; we are both three-time champions and are the only ones in Mexico’s history. I am looking forward to surpassing him once I win a fourth world title.

You are loved by many people, especially in Mexico. What was the strangest or wildest thing an Erik Morales fan has ever done when he or she has met you?

(Thinks and then chuckles) The strangest thing that I have ever seen was when some guy had a tattoo of myself on his arm. He had my face on his arm.

Thank you, Erik. I appreciate it.

    Thank you

To me that sounds like an excuse ready to be brought up after Manny looses again! Some people will say Manny could not Ko Maorales cause the Winning gloves were being used as some type of shield!
