Comments Thread For: Klitschko: Mormeck Picked After Everyone Else Said No

IBF/WBA/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko discussed the reasons behind the finalized fight with former cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Mormeck, who everyone views as a huge underdog. Wladimir defends his title against the 39-year-old Mormeck on March 3rd in Germany. Klitschko says his team attempted to approach Tyson Fury, Robert Helenius and Alexander Povetkin, but all three fighters turned him down for various reasons.

I was cool with mormeck in december because nobody else was ready or wanted to fight wladimir! but im not happy that wladimir will waste his time with mormeck in the new year! Even thompson who he has to fight anyway would be better choice to fight! But im glad vitali has a really good fight lined up in chisora! will be a fun fight till it lasts.

It's an awful matchup but, like Wlad says, who else is there? Helenius is terrible, Fury's nowhere near ready and Povetkin just won't fight him. Arreola or a rematch with Tony Thompson are the only others that spring to mind but are they really any better than Mormeck?

There are plenty of match ups for Wlad, however he will need to satisfy his WBO(arreola) and IBF(thompson) defenses next year if he does not want to lose his belts. Wlad also owes at least 2 performances(well, 4 for Klitschkos in total) to his german channels every fiscal year so I suppose Mormeck will do.

I would rather watch Wlad fight Liakovich than Mormeck, who lost to Fres Oquendo, Oquendo would be a better opponent for Wlad than Mormeck as well. I guess it has to happen though but id rather Wlad fight someone else in spring

i remember when he fought corrie sanders. 10 guys turned down the biggest payday of their careers rather then fight wlad.sanders was his 11th choice...back when the WBO title was a regional belt...

fight your mandatories, Tony Thompson and Chris Arreola, instead of wasting time with Mormeck.

at least those fights are meaningful.

sure mormeck will get his ass kicked, but he is a warrior. he will do his best and come in shape, unlike some other heavyweight those days...

I'd like to see a fight vs Thompson again, was very entertaining the first time. The tiger even landed more punches (though weaker ones) than Wlad.

The recent Seth Mitchell TKO2 win over Ibragimov (his first career stoppage loss) puts Mormeck in a slightly better light IMO considering he decisioned him in 2010. Nobody would sniff if Mitchell was named as a K2 opponent after that display.
