  • Comments Thread For: Team Golovkin: Pirog Fight Doesn't Make Sense, For Now

Oleg Hermann, the manager of WBA "regular" middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (21-0, 18KOs), would like to see his fighter face WBO champion Dmitry Pirog (19-0, 15KOs), but says the two boxers needs to fight in other markets, especially the United States, to build their names because most fans are not familiar with him and that creates a problem in selling this type of a fight to a major cable network. Almost all of Pirog's fights have been staged in Russia, while Golovkin has been fighting mostly in Germany.

this is the part about boxing that people do not seem to understand

this is boxing, actually. managers and promotors making these decisions shapes boxing. it's what you're seeing when you see a fight.

risk against reward. people make money off of these fighters. lots of it.
they dont give a **** ass about the fans outside of business terms (getting the most money out of them.)

fighters are assets to businessmen. just like land, or factories, or gold

an asset is something of value. your job in business is to maximize the value of your assets.

risking it all against a top flight and prime young fighter for small money is insane. they could fight eachother in two years, after making solid money fighting easy opposition and learning // perfecting their craft, and make ten times what they'd make if they fought tomorrow IF (and only if,) the fight is built properly.
fight b level guys and look spectacular for almost identical money (neither guy has the power to even get a main event on HBO yet, so they wouldnt be making a killing fighting each other now.)

as with canelo and JR, these fights will eventually happen

theres a reason why fans sit in the stands and the promotors get paid for it
they know what the hell they are doing.

Maciel certainly had a pulse, even if little was known about him before they faced off (Maciel is now down at 154 and is seriously a threat in the division)
Jacobs was seen as bout that Pirog would lose
Tatesovyan was a tough bout (especially considering how green Pirog was)
Kodzeav was certainly no mug either

It's true Pirog hasn't faced a who's who...but he's certainly faced the better opponents of the two.

Pirog-Geale make the most sense out of anything, i hope showtime makes that happen and Golovkin just signed with K2 so hopefully a WBA unification with N'jikam or Sturm will happen now.

That route makes alot more sense for both guys along with the division in general. Geale is a belt holder and talented guy as are N'jikam and Sturm and one less WBA belt would be a good ting.
