    Ulli Wegner Appreciation Thread

Give the man his due props

His insurmountable boxing knowledge has single handedly catapulted Arthur Abraham to the pinnacle of Boxing Glory. His instruction in between rounds has been imperative in the dismemberment of anyone unfortunate enough to be Arthur Abraham's opponent. Highlights in his stellar tenure include spine tingling truths such as:

    "you've got to ****in punch"

    "hit him"

    "you're ****in losing!"

"you've got to get him Arthur!"

Of course, the above quotes were originally yelled in German.

lang lebe Ulli Wegner! Möge seine Legende ewig dauern.

People who think Wegner isn't a good trainer should see Helenius and Abraham BEFORE they started working with him.

    - Helenius had 25 losses in the amateurs, although he did have a very high KO percentage.

    - Abraham is not very talented at all, his success was in large part due to Wegner.

    - Hernandez has a delicate chin and wouldn't have a chance of winning a world title without Wegner's working with him.

    - Huck is another ordinary talent molded into a world titleholder by Wegner.

It's true that he hasn't necessarily had the greatest talent in the world to work with but I do not think his training methods will ever produce a truly elite level fighter. What he does well is to keep his fighters safe from losing terribly for the most part. With a little bit of favourable judging they're able to get by most of their fights.

In Helenius's case, I do not think he would have gone very far with local training and management, signing with Sauerland was definitely a step in the right direction in order to get world class sparring and match-making.

On the other hand, Helenius has been shown up for being somewhat one-dimensional and lacking in a solid gameplan as has traditionally been the case with Wegner's fighters. Being able to do one thing exceptionally well will not take you to the very top of the sport. What Helenius should do at the moment is admit his weaknesses and work on them but I'm not too sure if it's going to happen under Wegner's training considering what happened with Abraham. Perhaps they will prove me wrong.

The only success he's had is because of that magic towel, without it he's nothing!
