MOSCOW, April 6 (R-Sport) - WBA heavyweight regular champion Alexander Povetkin is likely to take a voluntary defense May 17 while he waits to fight Wladimir Klitschko, Povetkin’s manager told R-Sport on Saturday.
Povetkin would join a Moscow fight card currently headed by WBA cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev’s bout with champion in recess Guillermo Jones, a bout which Povetkin’s manager Vlad Hrunov is also involved in organizing.
“We have the intention to undertake one more fight for Alexander before the bout with Wladimir Klitschko,” Hrunov said.
He added that the fight could be something of a training exercise in how to fight Klitschko.
“One of the priorities in selecting an opponent, expressed by [Povetkin’s] coach Kostya Tszyu, the opponent must be comparable in size to the younger of the Klitschko brothers [Wladimir],” Hrunov said.
“This will allow us to build the training process in such a way as to use the results also in the run-up to the fight with Klitschko.”
Hrunov added he is waiting for the WBA to approve the title defense.
IBF, WBO and WBA super champion Klitschko and mandatory challenger Povetkin had been due to fight in the first quarter of 2013 before the WBA abruptly changed tack to allow Klitschko another voluntary defense.
As a result, Klitschko will fight unbeaten Argentine Francesco Pianeta in
Mannheim, Germany, on May 4.
Klitschko and Povetkin must fight by the end of August under WBA rules, but Hrunov said he was in no hurry to arrange the fight before both have completed their voluntary defenses.
“I am in solidarity with the opinion of [Klitschko’s manager] Bernd Boente. First you need to wait for the results of the fights of Wladimir and Alexander,” he said.
“And only after that get on with organizing the purse bids for the right to host the fight. You need to respect both the fighters and the spectators.”
Povetkin has twice previously pulled out of fights against Klitschko after a contract was signed.Comment

Alexander Povetkin's manager says sometime this coming week, he'll will sign for the fight with either Andrew Wawrzyk or Joe Hanks. He's just waiting for the WBA to approve Povetkin fighting a voluntary on May 17.

Povetkin is truly the Tolstoy of heavyweight boxing.
In other words, long-winded, seemingly full of potential and viewed as hugely and critically important....
....but ultimately, deeply-disappointing, boring and massively over-rated.
It's time for AP to man-up and fight Pulev, Fury, Helenius, Wlad or Vitali or start writing deeply-dull novels.Comment

He had great potential, but he has been poorly managed by times.
Povetkin made a terrible mistake in hiring Teddy Atlas, who had him fight some very poor opponents and pulled him out of what would have been his biggest payday against Wladimir.
Now, he will have been inactive for 8 months by the time he fights Wawryzk or Hanks on May 17.Comment

Alexander Povetkin's trainer Kostya Tszyu considers the possible May 17th fight with 6'5" Andrew Wawrzyk to be part of the preparation for an August fight with Wladimir Klitschko. The WBA has now approved a voluntary defense for Povetkin against Wawrzyk (WBA #7), and so it is likely the fight will soon be signed and official. Joe Hanks was mentioned as another possible opponent, but he's not ranked by the WBA.

He was knocked down by a 1-11 fighter who has a 0% KO ratio, Aliaksandr Mazaleu and knocked down and nearly stopped by a cruiserweight with a 20% KO ratio, Harvey Jolly.
Why do these two top heavyweight contenders want to fight a guy like Andrew Wawryzk? Why don't they want to fight someone good like Kubrat Pulev?Comment
