Really sad news. I'm an amateur boxer myself and reading news like this , it doesn't make me feel any good. But just like in any other sport, athletes die and this one happened to die in boxing. I've seen soccer players collapse in seconds DURING a match. It's just tragic.

Many here on BS criticized Nate Campbell of quitting when he complained of not being able to see, but injury to the brain can manifest itself in many ways, even temporary or permanent blindness. Regardless, these bold critics are not the ones who are putting their health or even their lives on the line.
I find the sport of boxing intriguing because it pits strategy, style, personality, social status, nationality, race and even religion against a backdrop of athleticism and competition. But this is definitely a brutal sport, and the object of the game is to do as much damage to your opponent.
While taking the train to work I had a conversation with this man and asked him if he saw the latest big fight. He replied that he does not watch boxing because he does not like to see violence. I found this curious, and found out during the course of our conversation that he did a tour in the former Yugoslavia where he saw so much horrific violence that he does not want to watch anything that reminds him of it.
My wife sometimes questions me as to why I enjoy the sport of boxing since it is the only sport where the object of the game is to truly hurt your opponent. It is incidents like this when I reflect upon the use of violence in our society and question why we guys glorify it so much.
I believe that we become fans of boxing because we somehow connect with a fighter. Keep in mind though, that the boxers we love today are deteriorating with every punch they absorb. It is inevitable that the repeated head trauma will have an effect on their cognitive ability, speech, ability to walk and even character as they get older.
My apologies, but this is the sad truth about boxing, and maybe it's about time for me to reflect and find another interest that does not promote violence against my fellow human being.
