“I was with him at the hotel” – Roger Mayweather on his meeting with Koncz
At the moment, depending on who you talk to and what information you take in, the reports seem to be quite contrasting when it comes to the possibility of a Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight next year.
Pacquiao struggled to a majority-decision verdict over Juan Manuel Marquez last month, his third close encounter with the Mexico City star, and his promoter Bob Arum, on the heels of that harrowing victory, had expressed interest in a fourth fight between the two fighters that would ultimately settle the score.
But Pacquiao and his team have since stepped forward to express their interest in the Mayweather fight instead, as it is the biggest fight to make in the sport. That led Arum to change his stance on Pacquiao’s immediate future and people in the industry were taken back to hear of a surprise visit by Manny’s advisor Michael Koncz recently to the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas.
Koncz’s actions gave some hope that talks would soon be or are presently underway in an effort to make the fight happen but some felt that his visit was a cover-up from Arum and company to make it seem as though they were pursuing the bout for their fighter when, in reality, the fourth fight with Marquez could still be in play.
And while some headlines state that the fight is inching closer to reality, Floyd Mayweather Jr. himself recently came forward and claimed that no negotiations are taking place at all.
It’s an endless saga in many ways and everyone has their opinion as to what is really going down. During a recent visit to the Mayweather Boxing Club with my colleague Dennis ‘dSource’ Guillermo, we crossed paths with Floyd’s outspoken trainer and Uncle Roger Mayweather, who seems to feel the fight will be happening after all.
“I couldn’t see why it wouldn’t happen,” Uncle Roger stated. “The fight is too big not to happen. The fight is too big for the world not to see it. Since the fight is too big not for the world to see it, the fight has to happen. It aint like Floyd won’t fight Manny Pacquiao. And I don’t think Manny Pacquiao would say he don’t want to fight Floyd.”
And Roger did confirm that he had met up with Koncz, but it doesn’t appear that they first crossed paths at the gym.
“Michael Koncz? You mean Pacquiao’s manager? Yeah, I was here. I was with him at the hotel,” Mayweather said, pointing west, away from the infamous Vegas strip.
There were varying reports as to what kind of business Koncz was handling while in town, but Roger admits that the fight was definitely discussed.
“Talked about [how] that’s a big fight and Pacquiao needs to fight Floyd,” Roger continued. “That fight needs to happen because the world is waiting on it. There’s too much money [involved] for the world to not want to see that fight.”
Who knows exactly how everything will play out from here. Expect much more on this in the coming days…
