He was able to continue, yeah his eye was shut and damaged but I've seen some worse eye injuries such as Wolak vs Delvin (That eye was extremely swollen) and Morales vs Maidana (Eye closed since round 1 and still finished the fight) ...The point here is not that Margarito was going to win or not, maybe he wasn't because there was no way he was going to win by decision and Cotto was dominating, but still he should have been allowed to continue.

In fact the referee was the same that was at Wolak vs Delvin and he said this about Wolak's eye "It's ugly, but I don't mind." ... Seeing the fight at the moment of stoppage the referee clearly wanted Margarito to continue, he was constantly asking to the doctors if they were sure and that's why it took so long in that round to stop the fight, and that's when he grabbed Margarito's face and said in a sad tone "I'm going to stop it" Also the reason the bald doctor gave was just that "His eye was shut" ... So? I thought that they should have allowed him to continue but well in the end they decided it was better to stop the fight.

Margarito should thank the officials for having pity on him and stopping the contest. New york did what Vegas didn't! stop a fight that was clearly favoring one fighter, Miguel Cotto! had Vegas done that in the Margarito pacquaio fight, the injury margarito sustained on his eye would've never happened. even if margs would've continued the outcome was still gonna be the same, bcuz Cotto was way up on the scorecards. For sure Margarito COULD have continued all the way to the twelth round but this is boxing not dog-fighting so he SHOULD not have been given that opportunity to do so. The fight game cannot need afford to have a fatality or permanent serious injury inflicted on a fighter for the sake of Margarito's vanity or Cotto's desire for revenge.

There was no reason for them to stop the fight. They should have let it go to the end. If they were so worried about the injury he got from the Pac fight and it influenced the decision to stop this fight, then they should have never let him fight to begin with.

The fight was stopped because the NYSAC wanted to cover their ass#s. It wouldn't look good if Margarito ended up blind, specially after all the controversy there was surrounding the license issue. Margarito could continue but they weren't going to risk it.
