I always looked back on this fight as a dark one for Eubank (where many felt that Close was robbed) and it was the fact that Close was seen as just some unknown bum.
But I recently found out that Close was actually an Elite amateur who reached the final of the European juniors in 86 and the final of the World juniors in 87. I was shocked. I then found out that he was robbed at the Olympic Trials in Italy against Michele Mastrodonato and in the pros was clearly winning every round against 28-0 Frank Nicotra in France before a bull**** stoppage.
I thought Id watch this Eubank/Close fight in Glasgow again,hadnt seen it for years. I couldnt believe it,Eubank came out and looked phenonimal. I never remembered it like that,Eubank was playing with him and hardly even trying yet so quick and slick. Chris was having fun in there as usual,but this time was a little more than usual as whenever Close caught Eubank then Chris would kind of stop still and turn his head with a smug look on face then shake his head and give everybody in the front rows fits of laughter. Close was flattered with a draw. Eubank got lazy and gave away the middle rounds,but came back at the end to catch Close with a great right uppercut that couldnt of travelled any more than six inches,it was a miracle how Close managed to scramble his way to his feet at the count of nine after recieving that uppercut from Eubank and a poor decision by the referee for not stopping the fight there and then.
