TAMPA - -- Promoter Frank Warren previously said he intended for super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe, his client, to fight St. Petersburg champion Jeff Lacy. He apparently was serious.
Warren is flying from England to New York today to meet with officials from Showtime in an effort to make a Calzaghe-Lacy bout on Feb. 4. On Thursday, Warren and Gary Shaw, Lacy's promoter, will have dinner and work on a contractual agreement.
"We had a contract for a makeup date for the last fight, and I don't see why we can't come to terms [now]. We had a clause in the first contract to fight if Joe was hurt," Warren said. "I'm very optimistic we can work something out. I'd like to get the deal done and go home."
Lacy was originally slated to fight the super middleweight champion last Saturday in London, but Calzaghe sustained a broken metacarpal bone in his right hand during a unanimous decision victory against Evans Ashira on Sept. 10.
Warren contended there was a contractual makeup date for Feb. 4 if Calzaghe was injured, but Shaw said that was not the case, which resulted in a bitter fallout. According to Warren, Calzaghe's hand will be out of a cast before December, and he will be cleared to begin training.
If the deal is made, the fight likely would be held at the Excel Arena in London or the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
"Lacy wants to fight the best. Joe Calzaghe is recognized as the No. 1 super middleweight by most organizations. If he really wants what he says, he should sign the deal with Joe," Warren said.
Shaw said the Lacy camp remains interested in setting up a fight with Tampa light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver. Tarver has expressed zero interest in that possibility but is willing to talk with Warren.
