Comments Thread For: Merchant Doesn't See Canelo Ready For Mayweather Clash

It was a little over a year ago that I first started corresponding with veteran HBO color analyst Larry Merchant. In the twelve months since we have kept an ongoing column running between us while touching on several mainstream topics in the sport.
Merchant has always shown a great appreciation towards WBC junior middleweight titlist Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, even stating in early December of last year that he would one day be interested in seeing the Mexican star face off with Manny Pacquiao if he progressed properly. But while Alvarez has continued to win in commanding fashion, reeling off three wins in 2011, the latest being his 5th round stoppage over Kermit Cintron this past weekend, Merchant doesn’t seem as eager to see the 21-year immediately jump into the fire. He's right , but he'll probably suffer career-wise for saying so. Or maybe he just feels like spending the political capital he gained by endorsing the misguided judges in JMM's most recent victory over Pac.

      Viva Larry Merchant.

        YOU'RE RIGHT LARRY!

Now let's set up Merchant - Mayweather for May 5th. LMAO Just step on Floyd's foot and hit hime when he isn't looking. Wait, don't forget the illegal 10 or so elbows and you have a shot.

Larry Merchant talks the truth like a Boss just like after the Mayweather/Ortiz fight you don't **** with a former Oklahoma LB chickenweather.

Canelo is a good fighter right now. But he's not near ready for a fight against PBF. Unless he wants a payday like Marquez, Shane and Victor wanted, then OK! If he wants to become a legend, he needs to take his time and fight better opposition every time out. Up the latter. If I was him or his promoter, I'd fight him next with Victor Ortiz, a great fight in my book, then go after loudmouth Khan. Challenge Chavez Jr. in Mexico in a 150,000 seat bull ring. Then take on Pacquiao or Money if they are still around! The kid has alot of options. Hope he goes the right way!!! Hell, why not fight the winner of Cotto-Margarito!!!

He should start trying now because it takes a couple years to get a fight with Mayweather so put yourself on the waiting list.

I like Larry much better when he's not calling fights. Seems more organic, a completely different side of him than the guy who loves to wax poetic with over-the-top soliloquies which usually come off extremely harsh, tinged with bias/disdain, and overly critical of fighters he doesn't like.

Some may not like Larry Merchant but personally I think he's an authority and most a legend in boxing which I dearly respect...
