Fighters like Alfonso Gomez deserve more respect, if he were Alvarez size he would

have beaten that cherry picker in my opinion. I also believe the refs now adays don't give the benefit of the doubt when a fighter is hurt and don't give them enough time to recover. My dad who grew up with boxing its sick by all the early stoppages and we know its for the health of a boxer but when you have a midget named Alfonso Gomez beating up Alvarez in a weight class Gomez doesn't even belong at, he deserved the benefit of the doubt.

And yes, I know Gomez is Mexican-American but that doesn't make him any less of a Mexican.

Gomez was beating Alvarez at the time of the stoppage. I know that much. Heck, I almost had it being a shut out for Gomez winning. Then came the BS stoppage. I figured if the ref didn't do it, Gomez wasn't going to win a decision anyway.

FCOL, the judges scorecards read the following for Alvarez:

    50-44
    49-44 x2

NOTE: You should probably put more options in your poll.

I did too, I felt Gomez was owning Alvarez in that fight. Golden Boy Promotions is disgusting and the way boxing is fixed is disgusting. Gomez was briefly hurt but nothing serious but you know damn well Golden Boy Promotions paid off the officials to stop it way prematurely. It reminded me of some of Calzaghe fights, even tho I like Calzaghe but atleast Calzaghe was dominated his opponents when they stopped it, Alvarez was not dominating at all.

The good thing is sometimes a shaft job like the mega-quick stoppage in the Alvarez fight might work out ok for Gomez, he might get another good opportunity quickly a la Mares vs Agbeko II since the powers at be like to do the "make-up call" to divert bad PR. The fact that Alvarez just absolutely annihilated Kermit Cintron also speaks volumes as to how strong an effort Gomez put out in comparison and should help his stock some.

i'm pretty sure alvarez wasn't even trying during that fight. he was working on the mayweather shell defense the whole time.

I've heard that before and it makes no sense. On arguably the biggest card of your career where you're given co-main event status, you decide to mess around and look bad for half a fight before getting an atrocious stoppage victory? It's way more likely that Gomez just gave Alvarez problems because for all his talent, Alvarez has some pretty obvious flaws. He does not jab, is economical to a fault with his punches, and loads up on a lot of what he throws. And he only really is "aggressive" when his opponent is shelling up(which has been the majority of his opposition, due to Alvarez's power and/or due to lack of desire) or throws weak arm punches like Cintron that were easily countered. When faced with a guy like Gomez, who used good upper body movement and a good jab to nullify Alvarez's counterpunching a bit, threw tricky combinations and took chances, Alvarez had issues because the openings he usually gets weren't there nearly as much and Gomez was actually a better boxer in terms of overall skill than he was. I also think Alvarez wasn't used to somebody who got a taste of that power and kept coming after him, throwing a large variety of punches in the process. Cintron, by comparison, had the size and used to have very good athleticism, but has little heart and isn't the best of boxers, and now he doesn't even commit to his punches, so Alvarez had no trouble breaking him down with little other than predictable arm punches coming his way and minimal movement to deal with.

And again, it makes no sense for him to do that. It isn't like he's Roy Jones in his prime, Alvarez needs consistent, good, exciting performances to continue to establish himself and the Mayweather-Ortiz card was arguably the biggest card of his career, not a small venue against a stay-busy. No reason for him to do anything other than dominate if he can. He couldn't because the opponent he faced had the skills and heart to give him problems despite his physical limitations. He'll run into the same problems if he faces someone else like that anytime soon. Fortunately for him, his backers will continue to take baby steps with him and he'll have time to develop and better prepare for higher class boxing skills.
