Promoter Frank Warren says he is still confident he can persuade IBF super-middleweight champion Jeff Lacy to fight Joe Calzaghe.
-
The pair were due to meet on Saturday night, but Calzaghe was ruled out with a broken hand.
In the meantime, Lacy scored a crushing victory over Scott Pemberton and, having previously said he had given up on the idea of fighting Calzaghe, once again called out the Welshman.
Now it is up to Warren and Lacy’s promoter Gary Shaw to hammer out a deal.
“I spoke to Jay Larkin at Showtime on Sunday and he wants to do the fight as soon as possible in 2006,” said Warren. “I spoke to Shaw last week and we will speak again this week and see where we go.”
Lacy has insisted that Calzaghe must now travel to America for the fight – and Warren says that won’t be a problem.
“We will go anywhere they want if they can come up with the right money,” said Warren.
And he also dismissed Lacy’s previous claims that he didn’t want to fight Calzaghe because he pulled out of the November 5 showdown.
“The reason they are saying they don’t want the fight is because they think they will lose,” said Warren.
“Omar Sheika has told them Calzaghe will win and Robin Reid has told them Calzaghe will win, and that’s why Lacy is saying he won’t fight Calzaghe.”
