CBSSports.com reported Thursday afternoon that the Mississippi Athletic Commission granted a boxing license to Antonio Margarito but Mississippi athletic Commission Chairman Jon Lewis said a license has not been granted though he is in communication with the fighter and his doctor.
"Right now, I've talked to him, I think the issue is, as long as we get medical clearance from the doctor we should be alright," Lewis said.
Earlier Thursday, Sports Illustrated reported that the New York State Athletic Commission planned to reject Margarito's license application which would force relocation of the highly touted rematch between former welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and Margarito, which was planned for Madison Square Garden.
If Margarito is cleared, it is possible the Dec. 3 fight will be moved to the DeSoto Civic Center.
Lewis said Cotto has not submitted paperwork for a license but he should know more about Margarito's status Friday.
