Comments Thread For: Twelve Years…Twelve Fights: Ranking a Boxing Rivalry

by Cliff Rold - It seemed, when signed, an unnecessary epilogue for an era already closed. As it played out in the ring, the only place of import, Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez III turned out to be another vital chapter in this age’s enduring fistic saga.

It’s been twelve years since Marco Antonio Barrera, largely written off for having committed the grave sin of losing to the very talented Junior Jones, was slotted to make an undefeated Erik Morales look good. Boxing has been treated to a dozen individual tales as part of a grisly whole.

Three years after the most recent piece of the story (Pacquiao-Marquez II in 2008), action resumed last Saturday. Suddenly, more chapters appear ready for the authoring.

They are the Fab Four of the internet age: Pacquiao, Marquez, Morales, and Barrera. Three of them still hold titles. One original match remains to be made. A “Part IV” is being bandied about.

On the former, the chance for the one original match, there is Morales-Marquez. It is the only permutation never given form and it appeared to die earlier this year. Morales-Marquez failed to be made and so Morales chose the younger Marcos Maidana. Fans got a classic. [Click Here To Read More]

Its worth remembering that when the 1st of the 12 fight series started Barrera was already considered washed up. He fought all those fights after his 1st run and temporary retirement.

He started in the 80's and dominated in the 90's. Where were the rest of those guys whilst Barrera was dominating? Pac was getting knocked out by bums. Marquez was unknown and Morales had barely arrived. This is an important factor to consider when comparing legacies because Barrera made the lighter weights famous with his win over Hamed which isnt mentioned. He also took Eriks zero which has to factor in and Barrera is the only man of the famous 4 who hasnt been beaten by a bum. The rest all have.

Morales wants to be known in Boxing History, as the only Mexican Champ among the Champions, that Defeated Pacquiao!

Marquez BEST wasn't enough to knockdown Pacman; and fell short in convincing the Judges. Pacman has proven that he can take the BEST SHOT of his Opponents and retaliate with his own combos.

Barrera is another Champ worthy to make comeback, but then, he should concentrate more as Sportscaster.

A 4th Encounter bet. Pacman-Marquez is a future PPV Hit, but, then,
The Pacman vs Mayweather Jr Mega Fight, is what the fans been waiting
            for the fast one year.

Make it happen this May 2012 and the 4th Encounter of Pacman-Marquez at years end of 2012!

For boxing fans sake, make Morales-Marquez and Pacquiao-Mayweather in 2012, get rid of Bob Arum trying to make money putting up match ups we dont wanna see.

                  Make Morales vs Marquez now.

I really want to see it. Marquez can make a run for Morales' belt. And Morales can keep himself in shape. Morales doesn't belong anywhere weighing 180lbs.

Also, Mayweather vs Pacquiao can be made. Holy crap, next year is great for boxing like this year which is freaking full of ups and downs.

Thanks for this trip down memory lane. Some awesome fights these pairings has produced.

Big question is if there's another fab four in the horizon? I wonder if Jake has a take?
