Boxing Gloves (Professional) Main Differences

For those who actually box and have a diverse experience with the different types of boxing gloves what are the main differences, advantages and disadvantages?

I understand that the Mexican style like Reyes are smaller, supporting an offensive/aggressive fighter where the more traditional like Everlast, are bigger and may aid with the defensive fighter. But, it’s really any difference?

Do anyone has any knowledge on the glove selection for the Cotto/Margarito II fight? How will this affect the performance of each? I believe that they used Reyes during their first fight?

The difference is in the padding, it's not that one is bigger or smaller but the padding is laid out differently.

Gloves like Reyes have less padding on the knuckle part so the punches get through with more force but means you have a higher risk of hurting your hands.

I haven't used the newer Everlasts but they look quite a bit like Grants. Grants protect the hands a bit more and yeah can help fighters block or parry incoming punches because the padding is a bit thicker on the knuckle portions.

Everlast are made with a foam insert that is softer. Gloves like Winning have the most padding and are considered the softest.

Either way, it doesn't feel good to get hit in the face with an 8oz glove so all that is more to do with hand protection IMO than anything else.

Back in the day, they didn't allow the fighters to wear different name brand gloves, now I see it all the time. One guy might have Everlast, while the other guy might have Reyes, it's weird.

Grants are like Reyes, made in Mexico but a little more padding than the Reyes gloves.

So, basically a boxer will wear the glove that better suits his/her taste or could it be used as a “tactical” weapon to be changed depending on the strategy? It’s really a strategy or more of a “mental” edge?

Anything on what Cotto/Marg may use for the fight? I noticed that Cotto utilized Everlast for the Mayorca and Foreman but Reyes vs Paquiao and Margarito.

In my experiences at the gym I think it has more to do with the hands of the fighter. For example, Floyd has always said he likes the feel of the Grants over any other glove.

Manny likes Reyes and Morales likes Winning because he has brittle hands. Same with Alvarez, if a fighter has had hand issues, they tend to go with more padded gloves.

Glad Khan ditched the Reeboks and is now wearing Reyes, but I think that was just to do with endorsement money.

The Cleto Reyes glove is considered basically glove royalty. Great quality, and often command a premium in all of their equipment.

They are considered the puncher's glove BUT they are designed with the hand wrap that is allowed in Mexico in mind which protects your hand better and allows for more power to be delivered on the opponent and yourself.

So for fighters like Erik Morales, he used to use the Cleto Reyes glove in Mexico and because of the combination of wrap and glove he had absolutely no problems. But when his wrap was changed to accommodate the rules in the U.S. he started to have a lot of problems in his hands. Many fighters have had similar issues, such as ODLH and PBF which has prompted some to advocate that the Mexican rules for hand wraping be allowed in the states but that has not become the case.

Like someone else mentioned, getting hit with 8 oz gloves isn't fun in any glove and in reality plenty of people have gotten hurt, damaged, and knocked out with gloves some so called experts consider soft like Winning, and Grants.

Everlast makes two different types of pro glove. One modeled to be as close to the Cleto Reyes as possible and one made more traditional to the Everlast design wider to parry punches better but will also distribute the force over a wider area which means less felt power on the opponent.
