One of boxing’s most famous divisions has received many facelifts over the years. Unlike in years past, the division has many fresh faces with one dominant champion. With Sergio Martinez unable to get opponents we thought we could give a laundry list of potentially exciting fights and opponents for Sergio Martinez in the middleweight division.
James Kirkland (30-1 25ko):
Once an afterthought is now on the verge of a title shot. He has pure power and combine that with stamina he is trouble for anyone. His chin is a concern but no matter what happens with Kirkland the fact that he has power and a weak chin make for an exciting fight.
Alfred Angulo (20-2 15ko):
He has provided us with many memories in a shortened career. His power is unquestionable as is his chin but he has a habit of getting in brawls which makes him exciting to watch.
Saul Canelo Alvarez (38-0 28ko):
Alvarez is one of the most popular fighters to come out of Mexico and his drawing power in Mexico makes him a bankable star. He is a ferocious body puncher who throws a lot of punches. Up next for him is Kermit Cintron. Without a doubt his biggest challenge to date.
Miguel Cotto (36-2 29ko):
He is a superstar in boxing that has given fans many memories over the years with his exciting fights. He is a combination of boxer/puncher and has one of the best left hooks in boxing; His loss to Margarito and Pacquiao has many people feeling he is not in his prime. But one thing you can count on with Cotto is getting your money’s worth. He has been ducking Sergio Martinez but if victorious over Margarito might be open to challenging him.
Antonio Margarito (38-7):
His reputation is forever damaged for cheating. But whether you like him or not he is a volume puncher that provides excitement whenever he fights. His ability to break down his opponent in a fight have long made him one of the most ducked fighters in the sport. His next fight is with Cotto and a win will probably get him a rematch with Martinez one of only two people that have ever defeated Martinez.
Julio Cesar Chavez jr (43-0-1 30ko):
Chavez is as heavily if not more criticised than Alvarez but considering he had no amateur career and the fact that his last name is Chavez have made him one of the most popular fighters in Mexico. With an impending showdown with Canelo, Chavez style is aggressive and likes to go to the body. He is tall but does not use his height as an advantage when facing smaller opponents.
Dmitry Pirog (19-0 15ko):
Pirog destroyed Daniel Jacobs in 5rounds and is a solid middleweight with power. His team has offered Martinez a fight but Martinez feels he is not much of a name yet. Expect big things from Pirog as he has a bright future. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yDO5FL-CtA

David Lemieux (25-1 24ko):
Lemieux is coming off his disappointing ko loss to Marco Antonio Rubio in a fight he was dominating until he punched himself out. He has had only one fight go the distance and is set to face former wba champion Joachim Alcine. Lemieux has nine first round knockouts in his career.
