The middleweight division, suitors line up for Sergio

The middleweight division, suitors line up for Sergio

One of boxing’s most famous divisions has received many facelifts over the years. Unlike in years past, the division has many fresh faces with one dominant champion. With Sergio Martinez unable to get opponents we thought we could give a laundry list of potentially exciting fights and opponents for Sergio Martinez in the middleweight division.

    James Kirkland (30-1 25ko):

Once an afterthought is now on the verge of a title shot. He has pure power and combine that with stamina he is trouble for anyone. His chin is a concern but no matter what happens with Kirkland the fact that he has power and a weak chin make for an exciting fight.

    Alfred Angulo (20-2 15ko):

He has provided us with many memories in a shortened career. His power is unquestionable as is his chin but he has a habit of getting in brawls which makes him exciting to watch.

    Saul Canelo Alvarez (38-0 28ko):

Alvarez is one of the most popular fighters to come out of Mexico and his drawing power in Mexico makes him a bankable star. He is a ferocious body puncher who throws a lot of punches. Up next for him is Kermit Cintron. Without a doubt his biggest challenge to date.

    Miguel Cotto (36-2 29ko):

He is a superstar in boxing that has given fans many memories over the years with his exciting fights. He is a combination of boxer/puncher and has one of the best left hooks in boxing; His loss to Margarito and Pacquiao has many people feeling he is not in his prime. But one thing you can count on with Cotto is getting your money’s worth. He has been ducking Sergio Martinez but if victorious over Margarito might be open to challenging him.

    Antonio Margarito (38-7):

His reputation is forever damaged for cheating. But whether you like him or not he is a volume puncher that provides excitement whenever he fights. His ability to break down his opponent in a fight have long made him one of the most ducked fighters in the sport. His next fight is with Cotto and a win will probably get him a rematch with Martinez one of only two people that have ever defeated Martinez.

Julio Cesar Chavez jr (43-0-1 30ko):

Chavez is as heavily if not more criticised than Alvarez but considering he had no amateur career and the fact that his last name is Chavez have made him one of the most popular fighters in Mexico. With an impending showdown with Canelo, Chavez style is aggressive and likes to go to the body. He is tall but does not use his height as an advantage when facing smaller opponents.

    Dmitry Pirog (19-0 15ko):

Pirog destroyed Daniel Jacobs in 5rounds and is a solid middleweight with power. His team has offered Martinez a fight but Martinez feels he is not much of a name yet. Expect big things from Pirog as he has a bright future. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yDO5FL-CtA

    David Lemieux (25-1 24ko):

Lemieux is coming off his disappointing ko loss to Marco Antonio Rubio in a fight he was dominating until he punched himself out. He has had only one fight go the distance and is set to face former wba champion Joachim Alcine. Lemieux has nine first round knockouts in his career.

+1 What a disgrace of an article. How about fighting actual MW's with skill like Pirog, Golovkin, Sturm, Geale, N'jikam, Khurtsidze, Macklin, Proksa. Just one Sergio, cherrypicking joke.

            good post
understandable Martinez is older and wants to cash out
but he's simply not getting a Pac or Floyd fight
and dropping any lower than 154 for one is ******
don't need to target the big money names if they're lower in weight
he's the lineal MW champ, can command nice, if not huge paydays at MW
just fight the contenders around there
none of those guys will beat him
Klits making bank cleaning out overmatched contenders in a weak division
Martinez will be fine if he just defends his title vs the top MWs

I understand that (although trying to fight Pac is pathetic) but 2 things piss me off that i won't accept.

              1) Claiming he's too small to fight a SMW yet calling out Pacquiao makes him look like a complete pus$y

              2) If you want paydays against MW bums like Chavez or JMW's like Kirkland that's totally fine but you can't then claim to be the MW Champion. If you're the MW Champion then you have to defend against the best MW's.

              3) I completely disagree when you say none of the top MW's could beat him. All those fighters i named are better than Barker imo more skilled and some a worse style matchup for Sergio. Barker is a legit MW with a high guard decent counterpunching and a below average workrate yet look how close that fight was. There are 10 MW's better than Barker and i can see Martinez losing to several of them.
