As a kid, I preferred Joe to Ali. I was too young to understand that Muhammad's trash talk was all for promotion. Nonetheless, Frazier retained my admiration all these years for his indomitable fighting spirit, his equal place with Ali as the greatest antagonists in boxing history and the memories he provided.

I sincerely hope "Smokin'" Joe can overcome this terrible condition that threatens his life. If he loses his battle, it certainly won't be for lack of heart. The Almighty has granted few human beings the intestinal fortitude that He endowed Joe Frazier with. Godspeed, Joe....
