    Barker-Martinez gate vs. Hopkins-Dawson gate.

    danrafaelespn Dan Rafael
While Hopkins-Dawson gate was $285K, the fight so many ripped for not selling, @maravillabox-@DarrenBarker82, did a gate of about $485,000.

I thought they couldn't do that?

        That's what you said before?

they could have fought on the east coast.

My understanding is HBO didn't have the money to put in on regular hbo, but just a day or two I read some dan rafael twitter that said they probably did have enough money but wanted to make more of a profit or something like that so I don't know anymore.

Pretty sure that's not the case.

They flipped it to a PPV which means they still gave out licensing fees(they don't exist with regular ppv's). The PPV had to generate X amount of buys for them to draw a profit...which it definitely didn't do.

GBP got ****** with the west coast thing. There are plenty of other east coast venues beside Prudential that the fight would have succeeded in. ****, put it in the ballroom at AC and it would have been a rabid atmosphere.

It was on the west coast because AEG (Anshultz Entertainment Group) wanted it to be at staples. I don't know if AEG has any venues on the East Coast that were workable for this fight, but AEG has a deal with GBP and with the NBA season in question I am sure they wanted to get as much out of Staples as possible.

GBP screwed the under card though they should have filled it with local guys, or at least Mexicans and really built the gate around the local attractions while trying to sell the PPV on the main event.

It really is a textbook case of how to not promote or put on a fight properly.

It was on the west coast cause Main Events has a deal with the Prudential Center and they more or less rejected the option of having the fight there.

That is an AEG venue also I believe~ but yea Main Event screwed that which is ******ed, because they could have got something out of it, now GBP is going to blame them and they are in a much stronger position than Main Event so I have to think that will haunt Main Event in the future.

Really though the fight should have been in Philly, that was their only hope AC or NJ wouldn't have made that much of a difference. Even in Philly they would have likely not done great but at least there was a shot.

AEG doesn't control any of those venues though and that is where GBP looks to house all their fights that aren't in Vegas.
