I remember the Benn/McClellan fight. It got ugly as soon as Benn realized that he was going to be outclassed unless he just started wrestling. The ref let the fight get way out of hand--wrestling half out of the ropes, a whole lot of hitting behind the head, etc. All of it initiated by Benn. I don't really remember Benn landing a meaningful legal shot. It made the first Hopkins/Allen look like Frazier/Ali II. It was real ugly. Benn couldn't have hurt anybody like that without fouling. I always thought he was average and boring.

Nigel Benn was absolutely awesome, maybe the best puncher there's been (watch his first 22 fights for proof). And to call Nigel Benn boring, you seriously need your head tested. There has never been a more exciting fighter than Nigel Benn.
Benn had an extreme ammount of power in both hands, and constantly left opponents hospitalised with single shots back in the 80's. For McClellan, Benn said that he'd bring back the hard-hitting barbarian (he changed his style after Watson). Gerald was very, very lucky to come out alive (to stand in front of Nigel Benn with your hands down for round after round is suicidal), he should of been knocked out at the start of round two and many times over just in that round alone (let alone the next seven). Benn says that McClellan's chin and strength were unbelievable, if it wasn't for Gerald's awesome chin then his life would of been saved early on in the fight. Benn dominated from round two onwards, the power shots that he landed in round two and for the rest of the fight seriously brain-damaged McClellan more and more.. and it's no suprise. Benn did use his typical couple of little punches to the back of the head (that never did anything to any opponent) when in close, maybe once or twice in the 10 rounds. But Benn was always a dirty fighter, he gave opponents no respect and liked to be able to bully his opponent.. it was a mental thing, and he was damn feared.Last edited by JUYJUY; 12-15-2005, 10:55 PM.Comment

It's no joke. Of course, I'm across the pond from Benn, so I'm not so familiar with him outside of US cable. What I seen of him is not what I would call a good fighter. I write him off as one of those Euro punks who got a record and a rep in the Old World. I know that he was about to lose his ass against McClellan.Comment

I hate to agree with JuyJuy, but Nigel Benn was one of my favorite fighters to watch. Very exciting. His down fall was his chin.
Regardless of that, he won some big fights and should be respected......but not neccesarily talked about every single day on these forums..Comment
