Comments Thread For: Insider Notebook: Schaefer Rips Dawson, Roach's Take

By Robert Morales - Who is Chad Dawson to call Bernard Hopkins "a *****," the way he did after his way-out two-round fight with the living legend Saturday in Los Angeles? That's what Richard Schaefer wants to know.

Schaefer is the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, which promotes Hopkins. When reached in Mexico City on Tuesday and queried about Dawson's remarks after his "technical knockout" victory, Schaefer became peeved.

"If you look at what Dawson has acheived and what Bernard has achieved, it pretty much speaks for itself," Schaefer said to BoxingScene.com. "And it shows you that Chad Dawson really did not belong in the ring with Bernard Hopkins. Never did and never will and never should."

Schaefer was just beginning. He hit hard. He said that typically there are satellite tours the week of these pay-per-view cards, where the PR team sets up the fighters for radio and TV interviews. Schaefer said not one radio or TV station requested Dawson, but they did request guys like Hopkins, undercard fighters Jorge Linares, Antonio DeMarcos and Paulie Malignaggi and promoter Oscar De La Hoya - president of Golden Boy.

Scully embarrasses Schaefer in his responses.

If Chad Dawson didn't belong in the ring with Hopkins, then 95% of Hopkins opponents didn't either because his credentials say so without factoring in his talent, skills, technique, potential, etc.

People, like Schaefer, have no idea about all the preparation put into a training camp (critical thinking is non-existent for the vast majority). Few have had to refrain from eating the foods they enjoy or discipline themselves to a strict regiment away from home. It's one thing to voluntarily think about boxing and another to have to think about boxing 24/7, it can be consuming. You don't even get a break to **** or **********.

To put yourself through that (not even going into feeling like **** after 2 adays) and psych yourself up for the biggest fight in your career/life (because your career becomes your life during training camp) for what happened on Saturday has to be gutwrenching.

If you haven't been through it or can't see a situation from someone else's perspective, you probably wouldn't understand.

Haha. love the contrast in the replies from Roach and Schaefer. You can easily tell which one has been in the game a long time and knows boxing, and which one is a *****-ass fat piece of **** banker who only knows Hopkins from the foot rubs he gives him at GBP headquarters.

Shaefer is a goldenboy puppet. A fighter with a torned ligament doesn't stay on his stool waiting for a decision, a fighter in that condition leaves the ring on a stretcher or walk away to seek medical attention. Not everyone is eating this pile of SHT.

Yep. Iceman commands mad respect pertaining to his boxing knowledge. It was great listening to his opinions on ESPN classic fights, been in the ring, knows what fighters are feeling and what they go through. he knows what he's talking about and doesn't let emotion cloud his judgement like Schaefer does. Who the hell is Schaefer to even be commenting on boxing? The guy knows **** all. He's good with money, helped Oscar set up his business and that's where his expertise ends.

better than all that bull**** talks , california comission hires independent doctor to evalute hopkin's injuries . If they are real , they should declare the fight no contest , if b-hop fakes injuries they should leave the present result .

The writer should check his facts. In the fight between Allen and Hopkins, the ref, Mills Lane, about 5'6' and 120 lbs got between the two to break up an increasingly recurring clinch, and Hopkins inexplicably went out of the ring rather like Kermit Cintron did. He was supposed to have hurt his shoulder. Also, he should have realised that a fighter doesn't "roll around the ring canvas and see stars" (paraphrased) because of a rabbit punch, which actually was NOT hard, although the writer "says" so. he should have questioned this.

This Swiss ex banker (or whatever he was) is sounding more and more like Oscar.... and this clumsy diatribe doesn't suit his image. It's OK for Oscar because he was a fighter and relatively uneducated, but......

This is untrue. While sometimes this is the case, Sometimes the extenet of a torn ligament isnt known until further medical attention is given. Guys with torn ACLs and knee ligaments are often able limp away and sit on the sidelines for a while. I tore my pec bench pressing, which is a major tear, and while i was really shocked and in pain, I was able to sit calmly while awaiting a ride to the hostpital. The fact that Hopkins waited for the decision has no bearing on whether or not he was actually injured.
