An Inside Look: Sechew Powell vs. Archak TerMeliksetian

Unbeaten Junior Middleweight Contender
Sechew "Iron Horse" Powell (17-0)
vs.
Ranked IBF #12 at 154 pounds
Archak "Attack" Ter-Meliksetian (15-1)

Jaidon Codrington vs. Allan Green

Fri, November 4 at 11:00 PM ET/PT
Buffalo Run Casino, Miami, OK

On Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, "ShoBox: The New Generation" presents what many consider its greatest fight card since the popular series debuted in July 2001.

The first explosive pairing features "ShoBox" veteran, undefeated Sechew "Iron Horse" Powell, in a 10-round junior middleweight scrap against once-beaten International Boxing Federation (IBF) No. 12 contender Archak "Shark Attack" Ter-Meliksetian. The dynamite co-main event will match unbeaten super middleweights Jaidon Codrington and Allan "Sweetness" Green in an eight-round slugfest.

Powell (17-0, 11 KOs) is facing the sternest challenge of his career when he makes his fourth SHOWTIME and "ShoBox" appearances against the dangerous, hard-hitting Ter-Meliksetian (15-1, 12 KOs).

"Rather than hide, Powell is fighting a stylish and accomplished guy in Ter-Meliksetian - an opponent who could not only make him look bad but could win outright," said "ShoBox" blow-by-blow announcer Nick Charles.

"After a shaky start, Powell has grown on 'ShoBox' and now he is considered one of the best young junior middleweights in the game," "ShoBox" expert analyst Steve Farhood said. "In assessing a 'ShoBox' fight, I always ask the same question: Is a prospect being matched tougher than he has been matched to date? In this case, I have to answer 'Yes.' Ter-Meliksetian is a big 154-pounder with serious punching power, especially with the left hook. Powell is a well-schooled, slick-boxing southpaw. It is an excellent style match up."

Powell needed just 22 seconds to dispatch of Cornelius Bundrage in his last "ShoBox" outing on May 6, 2005. It was the quickest fight in the history of the series.

"Ter-Meliksetian looks strong to me, but at the same time, very green," Powell said. "He has never really been in with anybody on the same level as me. This is going to be the major factor in the fight. He just has not tested himself enough to step up to my challenge, and I think that is going to hurt him."

Ter-Meliksetian, naturally, disagrees with Powell's assessment.

"I really do not need to know much about Powell," Ter-Meliksetian, who is 7-0 this year with five knockouts, said. "He should be worried to know about me. As long as I am 100 percent, it does not matter. I love to be aggressive. I like to see blood in boxing. But I know in fights like this, I have to be intelligent at the same time."

Shobox presser update:

"The basis for ShoBox is to put young, talented fighters in tough match ups. As a commentator, I never want to say that one show is better than another, but this show, quite honestly, is the best. It truly defines what this series, the ShoBox series, is all about."- Steve Farhood

"I feel comfortable in the ring without the headgear and the shirt. I like the fact that the gloves are so little. Since there is no headgear, they usually do not get up if I knock them down. "This is a big step up for me. I have to thank Showtime and everyone involved for giving me the opportunity. I have always been the type of fighter to rise to the occasion. I do well when in the spot light. I don't get scared or gun shy. - Jaidon "The Don" Codrington

"Absolutely not. I have seen a hundred Archaks and I destroyed all hundred of them and I plan to do the same. " I prepared myself very well, I am just going into the fight positive and confident. I am just going to do what I know how to do; That's box, use the ring, look for my openings. "It could be an early night, it could be a long night. Who knows, I am prepared for whatever. I have the conditioning."- Sechew "The Iron Horse" Powell

"I am ready for anything he brings. If he's aggressive, that's good for me. If he comes out and tries to box, that's fine too. If just tries to move and counter, it doesn't matter. I think he will come out and try to box at first, but it will turn into an aggressive fight, which is better for me."- Archak "Shark Attack" Ter-Meliksetian

"You'll see a shark in the ring on November 4."- Archak "Shark Attack" Ter-Meliksetian

Last week, festivities kicked off at the very popular Planet Hollywood Cafe in the heart of Times Square. Guys like boxing promoter Lou Dibella, Showtime's own Steve Farhood and rap mogul Chris Gotti were all in attendance to promote what may possibly be the greatest 'Shobox' card ever. 'Shobox': The next generation first aired in July of 2001. The premise of the show was to give air time and world wide exposure to the newer and fresher faces in boxing. Men like the WBA "Regular" welterweight champ Luis Collazo, "Kid Diamond," Kendall Holt and Brooklyn's own Paulie "The Magic Man" Malignaggi have all called 'Shobox' home at one point. Boxing historian and Showtime boxing analyst Steve Farhood shared his thoughts about the stellar card on the 4th, "In terms of the quality of both match-ups, the November 4 show is as good as we have ever had on 'ShoBox.'. "Talk about defining the series! I know Codrington well from his bouts in New York City, and he is unquestionably the best young talent in the Big Apple. Green is a master boxer and one of the best young talents in the Midwest. The fact that they have agreed to fight each other is good for them, but great for the fans. "The main event is a corker. Powell has shown progress on 'ShoBox,' but he has never faced anyone as dangerous as Ter-Meliksetian, who has the power to knock him out. I am looking as forward to this one as any card we have had in our four seasons."

Now in the fourth season and sixty-six episodes complete, the sixty-seventh is set to reek havoc and carnage in Oklahoma worst, than any tornado the Midwest has seen. On Friday, November 4th, Lou Dibella in conjunction with Dash/Dibella promotions in association with Showtime presents an explosive night of boxing featuring four of the most outstanding prospects in the nation. In the co-main event feature the New York State Super Middleweight Champion Jaidon "The Don" Codrington (one half of the world famous "Chin-Checkers" ) puts his undefeated record and streak of knockouts (9-0 9 KO's) on the line when he faces the best the Midwest has to offer; undefeated super middleweight contender Allan "Sweetness" Green (17-0-11 KO's) in a scheduled eight rounder. When "The Don" was asked about his thoughts and feelings about the barn burner on the 4th, the "Chin-Checker" immediately responded by saying, "I feel comfortable in the ring without the headgear and the shirt.

In the main event, fresh off of his sensational :22 second knockout of Cornelius Bundrage on 'Shobox', undefeated Sechew "The Iron Horse" Powell (17-0 11 KO's) will be making an unprecedented fourth appearance on 'Shobox' when he steps into the squared circle against the number twelve contender in the I. B. F. Archak "Shark Attack" Ter-Meliksetian in a scheduled ten round junior middleweight clash. With this being his fourth appearance, Powell was asked if he thought that he had the psychological advantage over Archak, "The Iron Horse" responded by saying, " Yeah definitely, it's definitely going to play in my advantage. I have been in front of that audience before, more times than he has. " Ultimately I have been in front of better competition all together. "All of that is going to play a major factor in the fight." The outspoken Brooklynyte made it abundtanlty clear if he felt that Ter-Meliksetian brought something new to the table, "Absolutely not. I have the conditioning."

Sechew's opponent Archak Ter-Meliksetian is a native of Yavard, Armenia. Besides a very commanding and intimidating presence, the proud Armenian also sports an impressive record of 15-1 with 12 KO's. The only blemish on his record came at the hands of Nurhan Suleymanoglu, via a 6th round TKO in April of last year. Archak also has an outstanding amateur background, with 106 fights to his name. As an amateur he sported a record of 98-8 with 76 KO's. So Ter-Meliksetian begs to differ with Sechew, when he says that he doesn't have the experience nor the pedigree to beat him.

Archak said, "I am ready for anything he brings. If he's aggressive, that's good for me. If he comes out and tries to box, that's fine too. If just tries to move and counter, it doesn't matter. I think he will come out and try to box at first, but it will turn into an aggressive fight, which is better for me." Along with his nickname, "Shark-Attack" Archak has the body ink to prove it. On the left side of his chest there is a huge tattoo of a great white shark that starts and covers his left pectoral muscle and finishes on the scapula of his left shoulder. This was visible when he took his shirt off so he could have his body measured. An appearance that could only be described as startling. Sort of like the first time you saw Mike Tyson with a tattoo on his face. When asked about his nickname, Ter-Meliksetian responded by saying, "I took the name 'Shark Attack' because I like the shark. It is a fast and aggressive predator. You'll see a shark in the ring on November 4."

A lot of questions will be answered this Friday. Which fighter is ready to take his career to that next level and who isn't? Jaidon Codrington is taking a huge step up in competition against Allan Green. Sechew Powell is doing the same against Archak Ter-Meliksetian. So tune in on Nov. 4, it's sure to be a 'sloberknocker.' All of the action will be presented to you live from the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma. All of the excitement begins at 11:00 p.m. eastern on Showtime. Tickets can be purchased through ticketmaster or at the box office window. Tickets are going fast.
