Comments Thread For: Chad Dawson: I've Been Waiting For This My Whole Life

LOS ANGELES — Chad Dawson's eyes light up when he imagines his ideal boxing career. He would spend every day training in his gym and every night at home in Connecticut with his wife and four sons, far away from everything else he finds so annoying about this sport.

How about a friendly wager then my man? Let's say $100,000. If you're really confident we can up the ante.

[Apologies in advance for long ass post]

You know the old saying - Be careful what you wish for...

Dawson says he's waited his whole life for this moment (a fight with Bernard Hopkins). While I think he has this grandious picture in his mind of how he's going to go in there and dominate Hopkins with his technical skills, I just don't see him being able to deliver that picture to the canvas. Hopkins is one of those guys that frustrates his opponents into fighting his fight, even Pascal ended up doing it. Chad isn't a fast mover anyway (has a slow pace), and although he has the ability to put together fast combinations, he rarely does it. Neither guy seems overly worried about pleasing the fans (W by any means neccessary) and it will probably be a very slow, methodical and relatively boring fight. But, I can actually see it being Bernard who ends up taking chances, in order to try and get Chad to open up and throw punches. I expect Hopkins may even end up doing some clowning around in the later rounds as well - just because he can, and to make Dawson angry enough to actually fight. Though I don't think I've ever seen Chad taking any real chances, I can't see him doing it against Bernard of all people.

I really believe that Bernard is going to have Dawson THINKING too much, and Chad will again be hessitant to throw punches. Dawson is used to getting guys to come to him so that he can counter, and I think Hopkins has been similar in that nature in the past but will end up being the one forced to press the action. Personally I think that benefits Hopkins - when he's actually aggressive (like Pascal II) he's much more dominating and exciting. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately lol) the most exciting parts of the fight may be the dirtiest (fouling) parts.

I think "Bad" Chad dreamt about fighting the wrong man that would make people say "This was the best technical fighter ever, right here". Unfortunately I think it's more likely that people will be saying "There goes a fighter who COULD HAVE truly been one of the best..... if he would have just let go and put his whole heart in to it." In boxing you can have all the skill in the world, but it will only get you so far if you don't have 100% HEART and desire in it. Dawson admitting that he gets bored in training (and it's not like he fights that much) tells me he's really only in the game for the money. He wants to shine but he doesn't have the heart for it.

Chad Dawson seems to have a video in his mind of how he's gonna razzle dazzle and dominate Bernard Hopkins in the ring, and then people will stand and cheer and say "There goes the best that ever was". LOL. Whether or not he can take that video from his mind and display it in the squared circle Saturday night, is highly debateable and unlikely IMO.

The LAST thing Hopkins does is make his opponents look good... win lose or draw. No.... Chad dreamt about fighting the wrooonnggg man- if what he wants is to come out looking like a shining new star. Chad says the business of boxing repulses him.... I can imagine after a fight like this his opinion of it will go much deeper than that, because I just can't see Dawson coming out of this fight looking anything close to spactacular. The media (for the most part) does NOT sugar coat fighters who are lackluster, and Dawson wants this win too badly to take chances of using his heart over his head. I just don't see Chad fighting any differently then he did against Pascal or most of the guys he's fought. IMO, That's why things don't work out between him and all these trainers. He DOESN'T want to change.

Side note: Perhaps if Gary Shaw can secure Joe Cortez as the third man in the ring, Dawson might have a little more chance of winning the fight in some controversial manner.

look man...how can dawson NOT have a chance of beating hopkins bad...its not like hopkins has never lost and dawson's been in there with a slightly better than garbage tarver, gutted out 2 tough wins against johnson, and was diggin in on pascal until the headbutt stopped the fight...he was calling out hopkins for years, and hopkins made up some classic excuses not to fight him...only reason hopkins is fighting dawson now is because of a contractual obligation...i expect dawson to be fully motivated to whoop the champ

then fight like it Dawson! -- go after ol' man bHop from the opening bell and don't let up -- he can't hurt you so just beat on him -- use movement and stay aggressive -- if you fight smart and focused, you should be able to dominate....
