I highly doubt that. A lot of people act like Jacobs was one of these can't miss prospects. He wasn't at all. The reason why HBO doesn't show interest in Pirog is he hasn't beat anyone at all in his division, he is 31 years old(despite show good skills at the age of 31 they will start to diminish), and has no marketability(doesnt speak english).Comment

Look, if you look at what HBO spends on big events(outside of ppv) they will never show this fight, unless one comes down and I mean way down. Alexander V Bradley, hyped as the Hagler V Hearns, HBO spotted 2 million on the fighters. That was a lot of money for HBO events. Yes, you can point to Berto but look at how much Berto's opponents made. HBO always stays under 2 million a fight, that's just the way it is. Even when Berto had his huge fight against Ortiz, a fight that HBO was banking the winner to get a big ppv slot against Mayweather(which it did), they only forked over 1.6 million dollars. They did that because it would set up a big ppv and win or lose against Mayweather if there was a decent showing you have another marketable fighter. It worked out alright.
My point is HBO isn't going to fork that much over for a fight that only hardcore fight fans want. This fight wouldn't bring more viewers than lets say Martinez V Barker, simply because Pirog is about as known as Barker.
Unless a fight has backing from a major casino, these guys won't get the money they are asking for. HBO simply and will not spend the money it takes to have it. And it would be absolutely foolish if Martinez goes all the way to Russia just for a few hundred thousand more. The whole 10,000 people
simply will not bring in the 3 million dollars that it would cost to have it.

If Pirog is offering the best payday AND comes to the US, then Martinez has no excuse unless he has a signed fight with a superstar. But bet on it - no way would team Pirog offer Martinez his best payday to fight in the US. Russia is where they would be pulling the money to pay Martinez, not here. Maybe Martinez takes less to fight in the US which would be the compromise.Comment

That's not how it works. Boxing goes after the money. Ever wondering, why Pac, Cotto, Zaveck, Kotelnik, Maidana or anyone else comes to fight to the US? It's not because they love America, but it's because best money is offered. Same with heavyweights coming to Germany to fight Klitschkos. Martinez will have to go to Russia to fight Pirog. That's the whole point.
I don't really know why people see Russia as such a problem. They are obviously trying to pick up their boxing cards, and have the money to attract big names. In the end it seems to me it's just politics.Comment

There is multiple problems with Russia. First off, this is word of mouth, which doesn't mean anything. We need to wait to see what they are offering but I doubt it is any great amount. I myself don't feel there is enough interest in the fight in Russia to be able to attract big name fights. If it's a good number then we got something.
Secondly and more importantly Martinez is the champion, he's a name in worldwide boxing and names just don't go across the world to a nation not known for big boxing events. Say the payday is only a few hundred thousand more, that isn't worth it at all in his eyes. If Russia can come up with a good number, lets get it on but right now there is no evidence of it and to be honest I don't think many believe that it's true. Certainly need more information and in writing.Comment

And you might be right, but the more accomplished fighter, and that's more significant to me, is probably Macklin.
I don't understand why people in this forum think Pirog is that great. I understand he's a good fighter, but he hasn't accomplished anything. We can all think he'll be the next Marvin Hagler, but until he proves it inside the ring what we think means squat.
I see a lot of guys on this forum saying this is the fight fans want. Really? What fans? The twenty guys in this forum who know who the hell Pirog is. Outside of this forum, the only people who know Pirog are his relatives. So, lets not say this is the fight eveyone wants to see. That's ridiculous. Fact of the matter is is that Sergio Martinez knocks Pirog out and no one will care except the morons in this forum who think this is a super fight.
It's not. Sergio wants to go to the big dance, and that would mean a fight with Cotto, Chavez, Mayweather, Margarito, or Manny. I understand that some of these guys wouldn't face Sergio if their life depended on it, and that Sergio would have to fight the next available guy. But the next available guy isn't Pirog, it 's Sturm and Macklin. And again, Sergio can beat these Euros and nobody will care.
