by David P. Greisman - Time can be defied but never defeated. It is unceasing and impersonal, as consistent as it is constant.

Age, though a function of time, is a peculiar phenomenon. Its existence, too, cannot be interrupted, but its effects can be delayed.

Every athlete comes to terms with time, even as old age in sports comes sooner and more suddenly than in life. Nearly every boxer ultimately will be counted out of contention when the numbers add up against him, when the referee reaches 10 or the judges’ scorecards find the other fighter in favor.

Bernard Hopkins has defied time longer and better than all, a 46-year-old who in May became the oldest man to win a legitimate championship, defeating Jean Pascal, an opponent 18 years his junior.

Hopkins has been counted out again and again, though the numbers that added up against him were never significantly higher than the numbers for him. He has lost three times in 18 years, twice by split decision, once by unanimous decision. Each loss was close. Each loss was controversial.

One fight can alter the course of a career. Other sports have long seasons; losses are easier to bounce back from, wins easier to build upon. Boxing matches are made based on business; boxers who wish to remain in business most often must rely on results. You are only as good as your last fight.

And so after each loss Hopkins has pulled himself [Click Here To Read More]

Damn great article. Was reading it and I could hear HBO 24/7s narrator narrating it to me. Inspiring stuff but I hate Hopkins and I hope he fails.

Why? He's a boxing prodigy. I wish him nothing but the best for taking on these tough challenges at this age! I wish more boxers were like him.

There are moments where Hopkins looks like a top 10 p4p boxer (Pavlik, Pascal, Tarver), and there are moments where he does not (Calzaghe, Taylor, Wright). Yes Hopkins is 46 years old and fighting very well for his age, but make no mistake about it, Hopkins is not his prime. Hopkins in his prime was somwhere between 1997-2003. I noticed Hopkins started slipping when he fought Howard Eastman in 2005, he later lost to Taylor twice that year. So Hopkins has been past his prime for the last 6 years. It's up to Dawson to expose Hopkins age and finally retire him.

Because performance enhancing drugs did for Manny Pacquiao, what he could not do for himself.

Hopkins has had a great and really unique boxing career -- he's an amazing athlete who has been getting by on guile, ring smarts and somewhat dirty tactics for a long time now, due to age and eroding skills -- time for him to toddle off into the sunset because he's one of the most boring fighters out there these days....

Hopkins is an Ex Convict and a Buffoon!

                    He David Greisman!!!
You forgot one important FACT: Hopkins was in Prison in PA for 5 Years. Take a look at this link with loaded facts about Prison **** (Pennsylvania Coalition Against ****)
I cannot prove it but consider the FACTS listed by this organization about bigger, hulking stronger inmates like Hopkins who coerce and **** other prisoners. These stats clearly tell us that Hopkins might have been raping other men/boys during the 5 years he was in prison and looking at his attitude, he must have ENJOYED and RELISHED every moment.

Now, let's go to pure LOGIC.
Hopkins is a made up legend by guys like you. He has built his career picking on small guys (Tito, Oscar and Winky) and even now he is calling out Sergio Martinez.
Or picking over-hyped (but more famous than him) that he knows he can beat like Pavlik, Jean Pascal, and Tarver.
Or picking a faded Roy while ducking Chad Dawson the past 5 years.
He is a DIRTY fighter and you freaking know it. Even when he fights dirty, idiotic analysts maintain that it is the "Old School Way", clearly justifying what he is doing.

Hopkins is nothing but an ex con and a an ex rapist of men, period.
