Is Floyd Mayweather the most overpaid athlete in the world?

    By Freddy Fresco

I’m not all that familiar with every single sport in the world, but among the highest paid athletes in America, it seems that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the most overpaid athlete.

If the numbers Floyd claims are true that he makes $40 to $70 million per Pay-Per-View fight, than that means the people who distribute and promote the fight don’t make much in return even though they are the ones investing the majority of the money into advertising and promotional aspects of the fight.

Various baseball, basketball, and football players get paid for an entire season that consists of multiple games, Floyd gets paid for one fight alone, and his recent Pay-Per-View numbers for Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz haven’t been released yet, but rumblings from boxing insiders believe the PPV buys were less than stellar some are even hearing 850,000 buys. Maybe people got tired of Floyd Mayweather’s ungrateful personality and not giving us the Manny Pacquiao fight combined with the price hike of $70 for HD. Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez III PPV costs $54.95.

850,000 PPV buys are great numbers, but not great when you are the one promoting and broadcasting Floyd Mayweather Jr’s fights because they have to pay Floyd over 50 percent of the revenue and leave with little profit for themselves. Mayweather likes to call himself the PPV king or cash cow, I beg to differ, I think the cash cow of boxing is “The Pacman” Manny Pacquiao aka the Beast from the East because unlike Mayweather everyone involved with a Pacquiao PPV gets paid well since Manny Pacquiao doesn’t demand over 50 percent of the revenue. Victor Ortiz only got paid a guarantee of $2.5 million for fighting Floyd, Juan Manuel Marquez is getting a guaranteed $5 million versus Pacquiao.

Do you agree that Floyd Mayweather is severely overpaid?
I think we can agree on the fact that Floyd is boring and not worth the PPV numbers he makes,
This shows in the decline in his latest fight with 850k PPV numbers.

I think we can all agree that fundamentally sound basketball teams with good defense are boring...the best teams run Don Nelson and Mike D'Antoni type offenses...

I can't see why he pulls in such high PPV numbers, personally, i don't find his fights in the least bit exciting

I really doubt this fight sold as low as 850k...

That being said, it could definitely be argued that he is the most overpaid athlete in the world. He fights once a year and makes significantly more money than anyone else in the sport.

However, he is a MARKETING MACHINE. His fights have become an annual spectacle that everyone in sports looks forward to. Also, he trains pretty damn hard to stay in top shape and it takes a special athlete to reign as Floyd has for as long as he has.

... Sorry to sound "*****-ish" but someone who works as hard as him, or Pacquiao for that matter, shouldn't be considered more overpaid than the likes of professional baseball players and golfers.

With Delahoya taking a loss I doubt he's paid the same for his next fight unless it's Pacquiao and we all know he fears Pacquiao

No. at least Floyd wins, though he does get over paid a bit.

the most over paid athlete is def Alex Rodriguez.

found guilty of performance enchancing already, doesnt even hit .300 with 30hrs anymore. andhe still has years on his contracts left. 30+mil each season.

and imo i doubt Floyd hits 40 mil each fight, thats just promotional BS.

30 mil or less sounds accurate. 40mil? how, makes no sense. id like to see numbers, who takes what, who spend what and more. then we can talk accurate pay. till then Floyd cannot make that much.
