New York official Joe Cortez has been dropped from the WBO light-flyweight world title contest between belt holder Ramon Hirales and challenger Donnie Nietes in Bacolod City, Philippines on October 8th and replaced with Robert Byrd.
Cortez, 66, was in charge of the controversial Floyd Mayweather v Victor Ortiz bout on September 17th when ‘Money’ Mayweather retaliated for a headbutt by WBC welterweight champion Ortiz, knocking the champion out when his hands were down and the WBO have reacted after criticism of Cortez's handling of the bout.
