Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez Praises Barker, While Macklin Looms

Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, N.J. - It was not the quick blowout victory that has come to typify bouts featuring unknown European challengers on HBO - it was a "bloody" good middleweight championship fight.

He must fight Pirog because he is clearly the top contender (sarcasm off).

      no, no, no
lee/macklin should happen while martinez faces rubio, sturm, or pirog. and damn at lewkowicz shooting down the hopkins question right away. perhaps in time it could be possible to even really discuss if guys like cotto and mayweather never give martinez a shot.

LOL what? Sturm is clearly more content in making 2 million in his hometown as opposed to getting knocked out by Martinez. Sturm isn't even in the top ten pound-for-pound rankings. No one in the middleweight division is, except for Martinez. Martinez afraid of Sturm, give me a break. It's the other way around.

Barker has showed fans what he is made of, Sergio just confirmed it by praising him.

Not taking much away from that Martinez win. But after that, maybe now, more top fighters will be more willing to get in the ring with him.

I was a little troubled by Martinez's overall performance -- his defense wasn't sharp and he was lunging a lot -- most disturbing is that he wasn't landing many crisp, solid shots until near the end -- could be because Barker was moving so much on him -- Barker really made no sustained effort to actually win the fight which made Martinez's job harder -- Martinez was clearly looking to counterpunch, that's why he kept his hands down throughout, hoping to lure Lee into an exchange but that hardly ever materialized -- let's see if last night indicated that Martinez has started his downward path due to age....

Britain has some good middleweights in Barker and Macklin. Macklin should be a world champ but was robbed...

I hope Macklin gets his rematch with Sturm and wins.. Then he can fight Martinez and would get a much better payday seeing as though he'd be bringing a title to the table.

Macklin vs. Barker would be a great domestic fight, especially if one of them had a title. I would favour Macklin to win.

so Martinez is done calling out JWW's and WW's then?
                    good for him
fight Pirog, Macklin, or hunt down Chavez Jnr and expose him
Tony will beat Cotto again, then Tony-Martinez 2 can be made too
