Sergio Martinez: "I hope Margarito wins"

******* using ***** math????For starters, Tony already beat Martinez into submission so I don't see what he has to worry about.
Secondly, Cotto is a big ticket fighter who is used to getting paid at least a couple mill a fight. He's already fought everyone there is to fight so I doubt fear enters into his equation.
He just looks at Martinez as a small timer who doesn't bring the cash he's accustomed to. Simple as that.
If Martinez was selling out arenas in Germany or Argentina or Spain or L.A and brought Cotto the kind of money he's used to making, Cotto would sign in a second.
Unfortunately, Martinez is fighting Darren Barker on a hbo boxing after dark level fight on Saturday. Do the math son.Comment

Completely agree. Margarito doesn't give a crap, he'll fight Martinez and get his ass whooped, Cotto would never get put in the ring with Martinez.Comment

I think the key takeaway here is the difference between chasing money and chasing money with something to prove. Martinez is a contender (I think). Not to mention, a lot of people think that he's fun to watch. That's...oh..kind of important in boxing.
But, my point - Cotto can afford to use the "money is wrong" excuse or reason (whichever you prefer to call it). Martinez can't. He has beaten some strong guys and has a decent resume, but he's calling out the guys that are big names because he wants the purse. The difference is, he doesn't care if he's not suppose to win in the court of public opinion. He wants the fight for the exposure and for the cash. Granted, I'm sure he thinks he can win, but he just doesn't have to (read: can't afford to) be as careful in his opponent selection.Comment

I think the only person Martinez would not be the favorite over of his called out opponents would be Mayweather, and I would still think Martinez should be expected to win that fight.I think the key takeaway here is the difference between chasing money and chasing money with something to prove. I'm all for Martinez, dude is the real deal, but come on. Cotto has fought so much amazing talent that anyone calling him a duck is just a hater and an idiot (not necessarily including Martinez since in all likeliness he's just taunting him to get some bills).
Martinez beats him though.Comment

I don't blame Maravilla for feeling this way. Margo will be willing to take a beating and smile afterwards. The Only guy who can handle punishment better is Victor Ortiz after he got K.O.'d TFO. Cotto used to be a guy that had something to prove not anymore. We can only hope that if he gets past Margo he will step up to the challenge and solidify his career by facing the best @ 160.Comment

Im not sure Marg would fight Martinez if he got padst Cotto.More chance than Cotto-Sergio that for sure but I still doubt Marg would sacrifice his career with a pretty much guaranteed loss. He would be coming off a 2nd Cotto win with big money fights ahead of him. He would be in a position to cherry pick and cash in. I doubt he would chose the hardest opponent for least cashComment
