Comments Thread For: Lesson No. 1 – There’s a Right Way and a Wrong Way

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - While I know I’m not Mike Lupica (I’m taller) and this isn’t the New York Daily News (we’re cheaper), there are no doubt at least a few things he and I have in common.

First off, we’re both featured in multiple forms of media.

Yeah, fine… he works for a gigantic newspaper and has a recurring role on a cable sports conglomerate and I write for a boxing-specific website and do an occasional gig on satellite radio.

Second, we both get paid to do things we love.

OK, sure… he makes more at a weeknight speaking engagement than I’d take home for a month of overtime shifts – to say nothing of his actual full-time job.

Funny… the more I think about it, the less ol’ Mike and I have in common after all.

But one thing that remains is that we both put ourselves out there.

Whether it’s in print, online, in front of a camera or alongside a microphone, both my diminutive colleague and I have years of experience when it comes to assessing a situation, formulating an opinion and sharing it with the public. [Click Here To Read More]

Some of the comments I've read on the threads here have been unfair and while I agree, Lyle, that it isn't right for fans to attack you personally, I've also read you take some cheap shots in your own articles, most recently against Larry Merchant. I believe you sometimes get carried away in the articles you write and come off as insulting and as a Pacquiao fan, I at times feel you're insulting me by some of the things you write. I am a boxing expert and I favor Pacquiao to beat Floyd if they fight and I also believe it obvious that Floyd has been ducking him for years now. In your book that may make me a fool but I hope you can be a little more respectful towards those who disagree with you in your future articles.

since when is a win, a win? a win is only as good as how well you look doing it.
if you just got your ass tagged all night and do to home town judging you got the nod. not because you were the better man, but because you were the recognizable one it won't receive as much credit as shutting your opponent out and stopping him.

that's like saying.. oh, well trevor berbick and larry holmes whooped ali! true they did.. but they whooped an old ali. should they get as much recognition as frazier who took that initial 0? no..
