  • Comments Thread For: Barker's Trainer Rips Sergio Martinez's 'Hyped' Record

Tony Sims, the trainer and manager of Darren Barker, was highly critical of Sergio Martinez, taking shots at his quality of opposition and pointing out his lack of experience at middleweight. Martinez and Barker will meet in the main event on HBO on Saturday in Atlantic City for Martinez's WBC Diamond middleweight title.

the man's got a point - seirously, before martinez fought cintron he was fighting on the "regional" talent level for HIS ENTIRE CAREER! The dude has been fighting at the world class level for TWO YEARS, and he thinks he is some kind of superstar! LOL! He can't DRAW FANS HIMSELF! and yet he turns down other fighters because "they can't draw fans/money"?! He wants to MOOCH off other fighters WHO HAD TO WORK AND EARN their names. . . hahaha he can't draw flies to ****. . . .

That's the problem with the sport of boxing today. Fighters want to earn big because others are doing it but not getting it that it took them fighters alot of fights and good plans and marketing strategies to get that big money. Martinez KO over Paul Williams didn't help him any in regards to getting fights against guys in the lower divisions so he should just fight guys like Pirog and others and continue to win impressively to build his name up. ALSO dude looks like an actor or something. His agent/manager really needs to do something about getting him some more exposure outside of the sport to build up his image commerically. It all helps because in the sport of boxing nowadays. NO promoter really wants to risk their money guys getting beat up by another promoter fighter. Different times in boxing now.

well said. . . it's annoying how sergio tries to act like he's different from everybody else by referring to himself as the "people's champ". . . i guess it's his promotor lou dibella who is making him look bad, though. . .

It's always the powers that be in all industries. They want to strike while the iron is hot but clearly Sergio still hasn't reached that level yet. He is supposed to keep going until there is a huge demand for him. Pirog would be a smart fight after Barker because it shows Martinez is indeed the "people's champ". That's how he was before and people began to really respect and love the guy for being a balls out fighter. I personally think that Sergio Martinez is the best fighter/boxer right now in the sport but him saying stuff like "I would go down to 150 to fight Pac" is absurd considering he said it was too much for him to do so prior. He should focus on his division and take out the top guys. Shouldn't let his promoter set the stage he already built.

couldnt agree more, he needs to get more well known, dude's a talent and he can clean up everyone at middleweight and if not too late can get some catchweight fights with some top super middleweights
