Death in the ring, and its effect on everyone....

just recently as most of you leveander johnson passed away after a fight and he was just one of a long line of fighters who have met their death through the sport of boxing.

the death of a fighter has a profound effect on all of those involved, the judges, the ref, the opponent, the crowd, the promotor are all left feeling a level of guilt over what transpired but at the same time feel that the resposibility is elsewhere.

i have been a big fan of bob dylan and a song of his titled "Who killed Davey Moore" because it very poetically descriebes the range of emotiong following a tragic event.

davey moore (59-7-1) "the springfield rifle" died march 23rd, 1963 two days after being knocked out by cuban born Sugar Ramos at dodger stadium for the feathweight title. as he fell as he was knocked down his next struck the bottom rope and he died from the whiplash to his brain stem. anyhow, here is the song, i hope this doesent belong in another forum, this is the only one i use..

who killed davey moore, words and music, bob dylan 1964

    Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

    "Not I," says the referee,
"Don't point your finger at me.
I could've stopped it in the eighth
An' maybe kept him from his fate,
But the crowd would've booed, I'm sure,
At not gettin' their money's worth.
It's too bad he had to go,
But there was a pressure on me too, you know.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."

    Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

"Not us," says the angry crowd,
Whose screams filled the arena loud.
"It's too bad he died that night
But we just like to see a fight.
We didn't mean for him t' meet his death,
We just meant to see some sweat,
There ain't nothing wrong in that.
It wasn't us that made him fall.
No, you can't blame us at all."

    Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

    "Not me," says his manager,
    Puffing on a big cigar.
"It's hard to say, it's hard to tell,
I always thought that he was well.
It's too bad for his wife an' kids he's dead,
But if he was sick, he should've said.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."

    Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

"Not me," says the ******** man,
With his ticket stub still in his hand.
"It wasn't me that knocked him down,
My hands never touched him none.
I didn't commit no ugly sin,
Anyway, I put money on him to win.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."

    Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

"Not me," says the boxing writer,
Pounding print on his old typewriter,
    Sayin', "Boxing ain't to blame,
There's just as much danger in a football game."
Sayin', "Fist fighting is here to stay,
It's just the old American way.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."

    Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

"Not me," says the man whose fists
Laid him low in a cloud of mist,
Who came here from Cuba's door
Where boxing ain't allowed no more.
"I hit him, yes, it's true,
But that's what I am paid to do.
Don't say 'murder,' don't say 'kill.'
It was destiny, it was God's will."

damn, that's pretty heavy stuff. When a fighter dies in or out of the ring it's a terrible thing, and makes our sport look so bad, worse everytime it happens.

if you read it closely the whole point is that nothing is at fault but the fighters pride. i just think it illustrates how even now the same reaction happens where people look to blame and people are forced to explain themselves over it and the public tries to shed bad light on the sport....i think the song is very pro-boxing, maybe im wrong.

"theres just as much danger in a football game"

The song is obviously not for boxing.. it's everyone's fault, not noone's fault and that's what he tries to explain.. all the "characters" in the song are at fault but all of them push the blame on someone else so in the end nothing changes.

Thats how i saw it.. i might be wrong.

this is a real issue and serious. Referees should be more aware of protecting a fighter when they dont seem to response as far as punching back on their opponent.
