How far past it was De La Hoya vs Mayweather?

I love when people say that Oscar was the ONLY reason that fight sold 2.4 million PPV's. Did Oscar ever get anywhere close to selling that many before, or did Floyd??? NO. Oscar helped with his big name to sell those PPV's, but Floyd definitely helped big time promoting that fight with 24/7 and what not. There's a reason Floyd sells more PPV's than Manny.

Oscar was past his prime, but could still fight decent. You gotta remember that some people actually were picking Oscar to win that fight, mainly because it was at 154. Floyd didn't make a 150 catchweight or drag him down to 147, where he hadn't fought in like 7 years.

Like it or not Floyd had never done the types of numbers Oscar did for his whole career!!!! Oscar gave floyd his fist major money fight, and on that big of a stage.

The difference between Oscar and Floyd, is Floyd needs another name ALA Mosley,Marquez,Judah etc. Oscar was doing major numbers no matter who he fought, it could have been a cab driver. Oscar also was able to bring fans back to boxing and draw the casual fan.

Like it or not Oscar helped make Floyd into what he is now. Also Oscar was for the most part loved, he brought woman in big numbers to the sport as well. For the most part peopel tune in because they are wanting him to get beat. These amoing other are part of the reason Floyd resents Oscar so much.

Floyd likes to talk about how much money he makes, yet for a career and now he still doesn't compare with Oscar. Oscar diesn't talk, he just sits back and is banking with Golden Boy and making money off other fighters. Like him or hate him he's smart business wise.

Floyd did help with the promotion, but Oscar was the main draw!!!

He looked very good against Mayorga. Dzinziruk is an enigma. Spinks may have beaten Oscar, but ehhh. Martinez was an unknown entity back then. You're upgrading his standing back then based on what he was able to do recently. DLH didn't look great against Floyd but I also thought Floyd looked really bad in that fight.

But, what has/had Mayorga done at 154? What has he done after the first Forrest fight? He arguably lost the rematch to Forrest.

Just watching the DLH-Mayorga fight, DLH looks good. Fast, powerful, definetely looks capable of taking out any of the other JMWs at the time, not like the division was strong or anything.

Just based on that one fight a year before he fought Mayweather, I think he was the best JMW at the time.

Age doesn't reflect if a fighter is prime or done or what have you.

Roy was done at age 38, Hopkins was still going strong at the same age. Not every ages the same.

Oscar is the biggest PPV attraction of all-time but he has plenty of fights that did well, but not major too. He's sold the most PPV's, mainly because he was in the most PPV events. Mayweather certainly helped the fact that fight sold well. There's no question about it.

Mayweather benefited from having his first huge PPV fight against Oscar De La Hoya. But, we can, at the moment, start saying that Floyd Mayweather is about as big of a PPV draw as Oscar De La Hoya was, just based on numbers. And, Mayweather-Pacquiao, if it happens, has a really great shot to sell more than 2.4 million PPV's.

while oscar clearly wasn't anywhere near his prime when he fought floyd i still think he had enough in him to beat most fighters at 154 if he was motivated

oscar was very determined to beat mayweather you can see he put the work in in the gym before hand and gave himself the best possible chance of beating mayweather which i don't think he did for some of his other fights

i mean seriously how motivated can you be to fight someone like Sturm or Steve Forbes

the fact that he was super determined to beat floyd (manny steward makes this point during the fight) and the fact that roach actually provided him with a decent gameplan which almost paid off i mean he only lost by spilt decision even floyd's dad fought oscar won

i consider him to be a credible opponent for mayweather at that time not to mention he picked the gloves and size of the ring and the weight they fought at mayweather hasn't been in a situation like that since where he was the one being dictated to not the other way around

de la hoya in 07 would beat most of the jr and middleweights today no question with exception to sergio martinez of course

is it true de la hoya avoided margarito back in the day that would have been a great fight

He was past it at that point but he was one of the better fighters around the weight at the time.

Floyd won clearly imo but Oscar was in great shape and actually put up a decent performance.

A decent win for Floyd.
