I just watched the end again and Cortez wasn't even looking when the final punches landed, he was looking over to ringside.
The better question would be, "How that not losing control of the fight"

My condolences to Cortez for the loss of his mother.

every referee at some point in a match, given the circumstances, will take his eyes off the fighters to communicate with ringside officials... this is not new. this act was only magnified by the fact that ortiz failed to follow simple instructions and got KTFO. people are up in arms about a non-issue.

"Floyd gets flagrantly head-butted in the face and the ref actually lets (Ortiz) walk up and grab him again after he does it," "(Cortez) never takes control. He never sends in a doctor to make sure Floyd is OK.

The referee brought the two fighters together then turned his back again to indicate a restart to the timekeeper. Behind him, Mayweather threw a two-punch combination to Ortiz, who still had his hands down, ending the fight. No foul was called and it was ruled a win for Mayweather,

"It's the worst thing I've ever seen. There are only two big boxing fights a year. This was a multimillion-dollar fight that this one guy destroyed."
"The referee destroyed that fight," White said.
