Roy's trainer for all these years. But during RJ career he cruised by with ease. Not a whole lot of advice to give RJ when he was P4P the best. In fights with Tarver & Johnson I never saw Merkerson step up to the plate and kick Roy in the ass. In his 3rd fight with Tarver between the 1 & 2nd round RJ senior was like I got this and took over the corner. Thoughs pls

I think that Merkerson does not deserve much credit at all. The abilities and skills that Roy has were set in place by his father early on. When they had differences he left. I feel that Roy Jones like many other boxers was simply on auto pilot in the gym. The skills and abilities he had are what got him to where he was. Merkerson was just along for the ride.
Some other great boxers whose trainers were useless include:
Bernard Hopkins - if you ever listen to Bouie Fisher he doesnt say anything worthwhile. I feel that Hopkins can just fight and that he actually is the one who analyzes the fights and bowie just sort of is there to motivate him to go to the gym etc. What other fighter has Bouie had that was any good? none...
Marvin Hagler - The Petronelli Brothers had no usefull advice for him. Marvin was just a tough guy who lived a hard life (factory worker etc. much like Micky Ward. Anyway his trainers never gave him any useful advice and again he was much like Hopkins in the regard that he was sort of on auto-pilot in the gym and his trainers were just along for the ride.
