Comments Thread For: Cortez Admits He Never "Told" Floyd, Ortiz To Fight

If fighters rely on ref gestures, well then, what gesture is the ref saying when he took his eyes off the fighters and looked at the time keeper instead? Ortiz just received a knock down blow. When he said he thought he heard the ref said break, I think he misunderstood or forgotten what gave him that idea. Cortez looking away may have given Victor the message to hold on for a moment until Cortez pays attention to them before commencing fighting. I think that may have been the gesture that Ortiz may have confused it as hearing Cortez say break. Cortez did not actually say break but his gesture said break because he was not paying attention to them. He was talking to the time keeper.
"Protect yourself at all times." True. But I understand where Ortiz state of mind at the time.
Ortiz is a smart guy. I don't think he's going to let his guard down again.Comment

I can agree with that. Ortiz definitely was going to lose. He was actually getting hit more often than Hatton was and was probably was en route to a TKO loss by the way the eye looked already. He accepted the defeat way too easy for my liking. This doesn't however negate the fact that Cortez screwed up this fight big time. I don't blame Floyd for anything other than poor sportsmanship and acting like a total hood rat to Merchant after the fight.I think all three messed up some. I would have rather Floyd continue to break him down like he did Hatton. Floyd and Cortez are getting more flack than the guy that started all this. It's kind of like in football. One guy throws a punch and gets away with it and the second guy gets caught and thrown out. I think Ortiz has mental issues. I think Floyd does also...lolComment

I have watched it like 20 times and Cortez wasn't even straight with the timekeeper starting the clock. Now knowing that, how could he have officially started the fight back up? Was he going to let them fight for a few seconds and then start the 9 seconds that was left in the round? Don't be so naive. Cortez blew it. Oh ****in well. On to Pac-May.The timekeeper started the clock. When the headbutt occurred and Cortez called time there was 9 seconds left in the round. When Cortez said let's go and brought the fighters together from their corners the action resumed and when the KO happened, there was 1 second left in the round.
All you need to do is watch a replay, man.Comment

Great post, makes perfect sense. I'm not so sure why these guys on here don't geet this. Maybe just blind bias. ." Mayweather was asked several times afterward whether he heard something like that and, to his credit, he never admitted to hearing anything.
So if Floyd never heard anything why is he throwing punches? Not only that go to the 2nd page of this LA times article, Cortez's Mother passed away that night, was Cortez even mentally stable enough to give both fighters a fair shake knowing his mother was in that condition?Comment

how is that possible with out hearing the bell to close out the round? Cortez counted all the way to ten, and if there was only 9 seconds left you would have heard the bell ring while Cortez was counting.
Not saying he can be saved by the bell, your saying there was one second left when the fight was stopped, that is the official ruling, But there was 9 seconds left on the clock according to your post, and Cortez counted all the way to ten that doesnt make sense
Perhaps thats because Time was never officially in which is why we saw Cortez speakin with the time keeper rather than paying attention to the fighters in the ring and one thing is for sure, at that moment when he was speaking to the time keeper he was calling time in there, but are you not supposed to seperate them before you call in time?
Cortez ****ed up big time and considering his mother passed away that night, I dont think he was fit to even be in the ringComment
