Alvarez caught Gomez coming in off balance with a kind of half-hook, half-jab deal, and not seeing the punch plus the lack of balance caused the knockdown, Gomez wasn't hurt by the punch itself.

And Canelo was not breaking Gomez down by any stretch. He was just counterpunching and looking for big shots because that is his normal style, Alvarez doesn't have much of a jab, nor does he open up much, nor is he particularly aggressive unless the opponent pulls a turtle guard job, which his three opponents prior to Gomez did. Against a guy coming after him applying pressure, sticking out a jab and throwing punches on a regular basis, Canelo will fight a mostly defensive affair. Luckily for him, he has get-out-of-jail power and had everything else on his side, the ref was there for the super-quick stoppage and to add insult to injury, the judges had Alvarez up 49-45(x2) and 50-44 prior to the premature stoppage.

I thought canelo was trying to put in rounds and the punches he did land were doing their damage. i think he's working on his timing, hes got some pretty good tools to put to use

I was rooting for gomez and he was winning the fight, but he wasnt going to win unless he stopped alvarez. the stoppage was premature, and im sure with his power and better skills he could have stopped gomez later on. i wish they would have let it continue..

It was one of the most horrible shoulder rolls in boxing history, dude!

Imagine what Martinez would have done to Canelo. He would have put Canelo in a coma.
